A timely enquiry into the disjuncture between schooling and society, this book aims to examine the specific spatialities and temporalities of modern schooling through which non-normative childhoods are constructed as the ‘provincial other’. A large body of critical scholarship has engaged with the ways in which modern schooling draws upon certain situated, normative ideals of child development and is uneasy in its attempts to accommodate childhoods that are situated outside of this normative framework. The COVID-19 pandemic, in fact, was a further reminder of how schooling, in its current form, is limited in its abilities to address childhoods that spatio-temporally disrupt the assumptions of the ‘normal’ and ‘stable’. Together, the authors of this edited volume examine the ways in which modern schooling, ‘excludes’, despite set policies for inclusion, and how ‘provincialized’ children respond to this. Cutting across a range of disciplines from history and anthropology to sociology and childhood studies, statistics and demography, and a range of research methodologies, from archival to ethnographic, the chapters draw upon these various disciplines in unpacking the structures of modern schooling. Modern Schooling and Trajectories of Exclusion will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of education, sociology, research methods, childhood studies and social sciences. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of Children's Geographies.

This collection of original work, within the sociology of education, draws on the 'spatial turn' in contemporary social theory. The premise of this book is that drawing on theories of space allows for a more sophisticated understanding of the competing rationalities underlying educational policy change, social inequality and cultural practices. The contributors work a spatial dimension into the consideration of educational phenomena and illustrate its explanatory potential in a range of domains: urban renewal, globalisation, race, markets and school choice, suburbanisation, regional and rural settings, and youth and student culture.

The global trend in educational participation has brought with it a cross-national consequence: the expansion of students with "special needs" (SEN) placed in special education and the growth of "low achieving" students diverted to vocational tracks. This book explores the global expansion of special and vocational education as a highly variable event, not only across nations of considerable economic, political and cultural difference, but between nations with evident similarities as well. The Global Convergence of Vocational and Special Education analyzes how the concept of secular benevolence underscores the divergent and convergent trajectories that vocational and special education have taken across the globe. The authors embrace national differences as the means to observe two dicta of comparative research: similar origins can result in very different outcomes, and similar outcomes can be the result of very different origins.

The roots of any education system lie deep within the soil of its history. In India, these roots are entangled with the legacies of colonial rule, which have left behind not only administrative and linguistic frameworks but also epistemological frameworks — that is, ideas about what counts as knowledge, how it is taught, and to whom. This book, Echoes in the Classroom: Colonial Shadows in India’s Modern Education, is an outcome of a long-standing inquiry into how British colonialism continues to shape, inform, and sometimes distort the contours of education in postcolonial India. As a student, I often encountered a curriculum that seemed strangely distant from the world I inhabited — both historically and culturally. As a teacher and later as a researcher, I began to see that this was not a matter of oversight but of design. The colonial project, after all, aimed not merely to govern bodies but to govern minds. Education was never neutral; it was — and continues to be — a potent tool of social ordering, control, and stratification. In writing this book, I have drawn upon a diverse range of sources: from historical records and education policy documents to contemporary interviews with teachers, students, activists, and policy-makers. I have explored how English-language dominance, bureaucratic models of schooling, colonial-era hierarchies of knowledge, and even the architecture of elite schools reflect a persistent colonial hangover. But more importantly, I have tried to trace how these legacies operate today — in the age of digital learning, artificial intelligence, and globalized education platforms. This work is not an attempt to romanticize pre-colonial forms of knowledge, nor is it a rejection of modernity or technological progress. Rather, it is a call to interrogate the unexamined assumptions that underlie our systems of teaching and learning. It is a call to ask difficult but necessary questions: Why do we continue to valorize Western knowledge systems while marginalizing indigenous ones? Why is English still the ticket to upward mobility in a country as linguistically rich as India? Why do our school structures still reflect the logic of order, discipline, and hierarchy inherited from colonial rule? I have organized this book in four parts. The first traces the origins of British educational policy in India, laying bare its ideological underpinnings. The second examines the continuities that persisted after independence — from Macaulay to NEP 2020. The third turns a critical eye toward the rise of EdTech and the algorithmic reproduction of inequality in digital classrooms. The final section imagines possibilities for decolonizing education — from curriculum to pedagogy, from language to platform. This book is written for a wide audience — scholars, educators, students, activists, and anyone concerned with the future of education in India. It is my hope that it provokes thought, raises questions, and perhaps opens space for transformation. The colonial classroom has not yet been dismantled; but through awareness, critique, and collective action, we may yet reimagine it. Khritish Swargiary, 2025

Interrogating Conceptions Of Vulnerable Youth In Theory Policy And Practice written by Kitty te Riele and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-25 with Education categories.
Young people who are considered ‘vulnerable’ or ‘at risk’ are a particular target of various policies, schemes and interventions. But what does vulnerability mean? Interrogating Conceptions of “Vulnerable Youth” explores this question in relation to various policy fields that are relevant to young people, as well for how this plays out in practice and how it is experienced by young people themselves. What makes this book unique is that most authors had the opportunity to jointly explore these issues during a two-day workshop, and their chapters are informed by their cross-agency and cross-discipline discussions, making for a nuanced and thoughtful set of contributions. This collection is highly recommended for researchers and research students in the social sciences, as well as professional staff working in youth policy and youth services, in government departments and in NGOs. “Those who are most vulnerable should receive our greatest moral attention. However, the translation of generalised moral principles into effective policy and programs has never been easy. Political interests have invariably intervened, leading to complex debates about how vulnerability should be defined, classified, measured and represented. In recent years, these debates have become further complicated, as nation-states around the world have preached austerity. This timely book suggests that the responsibility for protecting the vulnerable cannot be left to individuals, but demands collective action, through institutions such as education, health and welfare. It examines some of the ways in which public policies and programs represent those who are vulnerable, involving a range of assumptions about the social, economic and political conditions that produce their vulnerabilities.” From the Foreword by Professor Fazal Rizvi

This edited volume advances the conceptual framework of the 'everyday urban' to unpack the ways in which processes of modernity in India shape young subjects and, in so doing, centers the analytical categories of childhood and youth. In rejecting simplistic binaries of agency, and teleological logics of development and modernity, the authors focus on the complex pathways of negotiation and conflict that mark the lives of young people across various historical and contemporary contexts in urban India. Chapters are organized across two key themes: Shaping Modern Subjects and Being Modern Subjects, while spanning multiple disciplines including anthropology, history, sociology, disability studies, and psychology. Together, the contributions aim to advance the field of childhood and youth studies in South Asia and beyond.

Teacher Education And Teaching As Struggling For The Soul written by Thomas Popkewitz and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-26 with Education categories.
Challenging conventional ways of thinking about school reforms and teacher education, this book analyses how the "knowledge systems" which organize how teachers’ observe, supervise, and evaluate children produces norms that have the effect of excluding children who are poor and of color. Building on Struggling for the Soul (1998), his original study of the day-to-day life of new teachers in the Teach for America program, Popkewitz delves deeper into how the teaching and learning practices of urban and rural schools. Applying an ethnographic focus to how difference and divisions are produced to exclude despite efforts to include, he explores the complexities of educational change and raises important questions about the politics of schooling, knowledge and power. This book provides an original way of thinking about ethnography through a critical post-foundational approach. Conceptually focusing the ethnography of "the system of reason" that organizes teacher practices, the analysis offers a critical lens to understand the contemporary politics of school reform, the limits of teacher research, and suggests why current teacher and teacher education reforms may conserve the very conditions required for change. Beyond its relevance to U.S. schools, the conceptual and methodological resources of the book have relevance internationally, especially given the global important of education responding to cultural and social diversity through teacher and teacher education reforms.

This book presents the doctoral dissertation process as not just a way of getting a qualification or even a method of learning how to do research better, but as a substantial and significant piece of research in its own right. The book will inspire current and prospective PhD scholars to take up ambitious and large-scale study projects, dedicating this most important time to a worthy piece of research. This edited collection provides real and outstanding examples of multiple research design methodologies which will allow doctoral researchers to develop a wide set of research skills, leading to the development of a high-quality academic thesis from which peer reviewed research papers and books can emerge. Each main chapter presents the summary of a doctoral thesis, followed by focused aspects from the projects where the contributors highlight the development of a research design, the process involved in executing the design, and present selected findings with their implications. Each chapter concludes with the researchers’ experiences of learning through this journey and the implications of the process for the development of the discipline and their own career. Ideal reading for doctoral students and supervisors, this book is a source of encouragement and motivation for new researchers seeking to challenge general perceptions in the social sciences that PhD or other doctoral research projects must be small-scale rather trivial studies, but can instead produce robust findings that have real-world implications.
