Two particle azimuthal correlation functions measured in pp and AuAu collisions at [square root of s subscript NN] = 200 GeV at midrapidity with the central arms of the PHENIX detector are analyzed in order to extract the properties of hadronic jets produced in QCD vacuum and highly excited QCD media, like the jet shape parameters j[Subscript T] and k[Subscript T], the jet conditional yields (number of associated hadrons per high p[Subscript T] trigger hadron), and the jet fragmentation function. The analysis of pp data starts with the measurement of the vacuum fragmentation function from which the p[Subscript T] dependence of the mean fragmentation momentum fraction z is extracted. We obtain a constant value of z = 0.74±0.02 for p[Subscript T] above 3 GeV/c. Soft (non-perturbative) parton fragmentation becomes significant below 3 GeV/c and the slope of the fragmentation function is p[Subscript T] dependent in this region. Gaussian fits to jet induced azimuthal correlations are employed to measure the mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] = 359 ± 11 (stat) ± 6 (syst) MeV/c and the mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] = 964 ± 49 (stat) ± 16 (syst) MeV/c. The analysis of AuAu data is based on azimuthal correlation functions between charged hadrons in the 1.5-3 GeV/c and 3-5 GeV/c p[Subscript T] regions in five classes of collision centrality. The mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] is centrality independent and consistent with the value in pp data mentioned above. A strong broadening with the centrality of the extracted mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] (multiplied by z[Subscript trigg]) is observed. This is an important finding because hadronic jet quenching through energy loss is expected to be accompanied by a broadening effect. Another important finding is that the jet conditional yields in both the near (delta phi [Difference] 0) and away (delta phi [Difference] pi) regions exhibit a slightly raising trend with centrality. This was also expected to accompany the jet quenching found at higher p[Subscript T] based on simple energy conservation considerations.

The STAR collaboration recorded [square root of s] =200 GeV per nucleon d+Au and p+pcollision events during the year 2003 RHIC run. In the p+p and the d+Au data samples, itis possible to reconstruct jets and make comparisons between them. This dissertation describes the reconstructed jet sample from the p+p events, the measurements of the jet jT distribution which quantifies the shape of the jet perpendicular to the jet direction, the jet fragmentation function (z), which quantifies the fraction of jet momentum carried by the jet particles, and the width of the parton momentum broadening distribution (kT). This dissertation also describes the comparison of these results to the reconstructed jet sample from d+Au events. Measurements of jet jT and jet fragmentation from p+p, d+Au, and PYTHIA are compared. The z and jT distributions from p+p and also d+Au are found to be consistent with PYTHIA event simulation version 6.205. RMS (jT) equals 612"12"30 MeV/c for p+p, and RMS (jT) equals 630"13"30 MeV/c for d+Au. The p+p kT Gaussian sigma (width) equals 2.08"0.12"0.13 GeV/c. This width is consistent with PYTHIA, kT literature surveys, and other RHIC measurements. A limit on nuclear kT broadening in the Au nucleus is also obtained, showing that nuclear kT is consistent with zero to within 0.5 GeV/c. The present status of the RdAu measurement from jets is also described. The nuclear kT broadening, in particular, is a measurement which has been done at this energy for the first time at RHIC. These measurements, while interesting by themselves, also will contribute ultimately to the understanding of Au+Au collisions at RHIC, and the properties of the high-density matter which results from them.

Jets have been studied in high energy heavy ion collisions by measuring the angular correlation between particles at high transverse momentum. Differences in the yield and shape of the angular correlations as a function of system size give information on the medium produced in the collision. Such modifications can be used to infer the presence of a Quark-Gluon Plasma phase, wherein parton degrees of freedom are manifest over nuclear rather than nucleonic scales. In the present work, two-particle correlations were studied in \(d+Au\) and \(Au+Au\) collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{NN}}\) = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The technique was extended to include pseudo-rapidity, permitting jets to be characterised in two-dimensions, and enabling the jet shape to be studied in greater detail. Corrections were developed for the incomplete detector acceptance and finite two-track resolution. Both unidentified and identified particle correlations were studied, using charged tracks and neutral strange particles \(\Lambda, \overline{\Lambda}\), and \(K^0_{Short}\) reconstructed from their characteristic \(V\)0 decay topology. The focus of the analysis was the correlation peak centred at zero azimuthal separation, which is significantly enhanced in central \(Au+Au\) collisions compared to lighter systems. The modified peak was found to comprise a jet-like peak broadened in the pseudo-rapidity direction, sitting atop a long range pseudo-rapidity correlation. The former is suggestive of jet modification by the medium, and the latter may indicate a medium response to jets. Correlations with identified particles indicated the modified same side peak may in part be formed from particles originating from the underlying event.

Jet production rates are measured in p+p and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R = 0.3 anti-kt algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multi-wire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (pT) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with 12

Heavy flavor quarks are produced early in heavy ion collisions and will experience the full evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Measurements at forward rapidity may be influenced as much, or more, by the cold nuclear matter effects as by the hot nuclear matter effects associated with a QGP. As the medium evolves, the initial spatial anisotropy of participants is converted to an azimuthal anisotropy in the momentum space of outgoing particles. Therefore, the momentum spectra modification and anisotropy parameters provide useful information about the heavy quark interaction with the bulk medium. Asymmetric heavy ion collisions, such as Cu+Au, provide a unique geometry with which to study the dynamics of the heavy quarks, relative to that in symmetric collisions. In particular, asymmetries in the yields between the Cu-going and Au-going directions may help unentangle the so-called cold nuclear matter effects from the hot nuclear matter effects indicative of a QGP. In addition, the parameters v2 and v3 in asymmetric collisions may be modified relative to the symmetric collisions due to the unique geometry provided in mid-central Cu+Au collisions. This dissertation presents the measurement of the yield and azimuthal anisotropy of single muons originating from heavy flavor decays in [square root of]SNN [center-of-mass energy per nucleon] = 200 GeV Cu+Au collisions.

The CMS Collaboration presents the first measurement of the differential cross section of jets from charm quarks produced in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV, as well as results from charm quark jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt(s)= 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. By comparing the yields of the pPb and pp collision systems at the same energy, a nuclear modification factor for charm jets in pPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV of R[pA] = 0.92 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst) is obtained. This is consistent with an absence of final-state energy loss for charm quarks in pPb collisions. In addition, the fraction of jets coming from charm quarks is found to be consistent with that predicted by PYTHIA 6 for pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 2.76 and 5.02 TeV, and is independent of the jet transverse momentum from 55 to 400 GeV.
