Molecular Genetic Mechanisms in Development and Aging discusses the mechanisms of aging at the level of the genome. This book explores the fundamental knowledge concerning the regulation and expression of gene, which is derived from investigations on microbial organisms. Organized into nine chapters, this book starts with an overview of the molecular genetic basis for the processes of aging. This text then explores the highly complex multicellular members of the class Insecta, which provide the researcher with many distinct and unique advantages for aging studies. Other chapters discuss the mechanisms of genetic control and organization during the development and aging of eukaryotes, which pose some challenging problems in cellular and developmental biology. The final chapter deals with the limitations of previous studies, including the lack of comparability due to differences in techniques, the measuring of free amino acid titers in hemolyph only, and differing diet and environmental variations. Biologists and students interested in developmental and molecular genetics will find this book useful.

Although as part of my general plan, this book is a continua tion of my earlier monograph "Protein Biosynthesis and Problems of Ontogenesis,"* published in 1963, in all other respects it is an independent work. The earlier monograph was devoted to the analysis of many of the aspects of the problem of protein biosynthesis, and problems of inheritance and development were discussed only insofar as they are derivatives of the problems of biosynthesis. The complex act of protein biosynthesis, comprising autore production of the genetic material (DNA), formation of the templates of protein synthesis (messenger RNA), synthesis of amino acid carriers (transfer RNA), formation of ribosomes and polysomes, activation of amino acids, and so on, was examined in the previous monograph not merely from the standpoint of interaction between the components of this system, but also from that of their mani festation in actual biological systems during morphogenesis and aging of the organism. However, both morphogenesis and aging were investigated very generally, Simply as models, without any detailed analysis of their specific features and complexity. The present book is therefore a logical continuation of its prede cessor. It rests largely on a comprehensive analysis of the molecular-genetic and biochemical aspects of development and differentiation of living organisms, and questions of protein biosyn thesis are discussed briefly and generally, and only so far as is necessary for fulfillment of the primary task. • Zh. Genetic Mechanisms of Development is a compilation of articles that surveys the application of genetic systems of analysis to the resolution of fundamental problems in developmental biology. The book is composed of sections that deal with various aspects of genetic mechanisms. The first section tackles the genetic analysis of gene regulation in microorganisms. The second section discusses the application of Mendelian genetics to the study of the development of Drosophila, amphibians, and the laboratory mouse. The last section introduces somatic cell genetics, a tool for developmental biologists. Biologists, geneticists, zoologists, and researchers will find the book a good source of information.

As a result of the molecular genetic analysis of development similar mechanisms for the regulation of gene expression are found in a wide range of organisms. In "Development - the Molecular Genetic Approach" these common mechanisms as well as the specific events leading to a differentiated cell are described. Particular items treated are, for example, how asymmetry is achieved, how cell size is determined, how cell division is controlled, how cell lineage influences development, how cells know their position, and how cells communicate during development.

Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) is a highly versatile model with a genetic legacy of more than a century. It provides powerful genetic, cellular, biochemical and molecular biology tools to address many questions extending from basic biology to human diseases. One of the most important questions in biology is how a multi-cellular organism develops from a single-celled embryo. The discovery of the genes responsible for pattern formation has helped refine this question and has led to other questions, such as the role of various genetic and cell biological pathways in regulating the process of pattern formation and growth during organogenesis. The Drosophila eye model has been extensively used to study molecular genetic mechanisms involved in patterning and growth. Since the genetic machinery involved in the Drosophila eye is similar to humans, it has been used to model human diseases and homology to eyes in other taxa. This updated second edition covers current progress in the study of molecular genetic mechanisms of pattern formation, mutations in axial patterning, genetic regulation of growth, and more using the Drosophila eye as a model.

Undoubtedly, Drosophila melanogaster, fruit fly, has proved to be one of the most popular invertebrate model organisms, and the work horse for modern day biologists. Drosophila, a highly versatile model with a genetic legacy of more than a century, provides powerful genetic, cellular, biochemical and molecular biology tools to address many questions extending from basic biology to human diseases. One of the most important questions in biology focuses on how does a multi-cellular organism develop from a single-celled embryo. The discovery of the genes responsible for pattern formation has helped refine this question, and led to other questions, such as the role of various genetics and cell biological pathways in regulating the crucial process of pattern formation and growth during organogenesis. Drosophila eye model has been extensively used to study molecular genetic mechanisms involved in patterning and growth. Since the genetic machinery involved in the Drosophila eye is similar to humans, it has been used to model human diseases and homology to eyes in other taxa. This book will discuss molecular genetic mechanisms of pattern formation, mutations in axial patterning, Genetic regulation of growth in Drosophila eye, and more. There have been no titles in the past ten years covering this topic, thus an update is urgently needed.

The first edition of Embryos, Genes and BirthDefects, edited by the late Peter Thorogood, was a radicalnew book aimed at bridging the gap between the medical disciplinesof embryology and dysmorphology, and recent advances in cellular, molecular and developmental biology. This new edition remainsunique in its breadth and brings up to date our understanding ofbirth defects and of the strategies utilized to gain suchknowledge. It features new chapters on human cytogenetics, mutagenesis and the eyes and ears. The book presents key topics in developmental biology andexplains how they provide the foundations for understandingclinical birth defects. The first six chapters introduce conceptsand strategies adopted to elucidate developmental anomalies leadingto birth defects. The book then focuses on specific organs andreviews the cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting theirdevelopment and how disruption of these mechanisms by genetic orenvironmental factors may underlie certain birth defects. Thechapters are concise and provide up-to-date coverage of topics in aformat that is easily accessible and yet at the forefront ofresearch. Written primarily for paediatricians, obstetricians, clinicalgeneticists and allied workers, this book guides the reader throughthe contribution of modern molecular biology to our understandingof human development. Developmental and cellular biologists willlearn how errors in the cellular and genetic mechanism can lead toclassical disorders, diseases and syndromes.
