Karen initially believed that her interest and curiosity in the new age realm would lead her to a full recovery or cure from Multiple Sclerosis. Prior to writing her book she read another book which was a guide for beginner writers and she knew she had to finish writing her thoughts on paper before she could continue as she thought, to write about Practitioners. However, Karen couldnt stop writing about her mother but continued to write and found that the writing process became very healing for her. This new journey became the source of what healing from Multiple Sclerosis was all about for Karen. What she gained from the result of her relationship with her mother was to learn to love herself. Once she did that she was able to break through her chrysalis and transform into a beautiful, spiritually-healed woman.

William Franklin Hickson III grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, a college town with a strong middle-class community of African-Americans. If he and his friends were not going to football games or watching football on television, they were playing football. They even had their own league—the FYFL—or the Front Yard Football League. As one of the first black players in the youth sports programs at the Orangeburg Recreation Department, he learned valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and respect. A high school injury prevented him from enjoying the type of college career he wanted—and so he turned to coaching. In the early 1990s, however, he began suffering health problems and was given the nonspecific diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
