William Franklin Hickson III grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, a college town with a strong middle-class community of African-Americans. If he and his friends were not going to football games or watching football on television, they were playing football. They even had their own league—the FYFL—or the Front Yard Football League. As one of the first black players in the youth sports programs at the Orangeburg Recreation Department, he learned valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and respect. A high school injury prevented him from enjoying the type of college career he wanted—and so he turned to coaching. In the early 1990s, however, he began suffering health problems and was given the nonspecific diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. In this memoir, he shares his golden opportunities to lead, his big dreams and disappointments, his setbacks and achievements—and how his faith, determination, optimism, and love for family led him to succeed in his chosen profession. Content-based image retrieval is the set of techniques for retrieving relevant images from an image database on the basis of automatically derived image features. The need for efficient content-based image re trieval has increased tremendously in many application areas such as biomedicine, the military, commerce, education, and Web image clas sification and searching. In the biomedical domain, content-based im age retrieval can be used in patient digital libraries, clinical diagnosis, searching of 2-D electrophoresis gels, and pathology slides. I started my work on content-based image retrieval in 1995 when I was with Stanford University. The project was initiated by the Stan ford University Libraries and later funded by a research grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal was to design and implement a computer system capable of indexing and retrieving large collections of digitized multimedia data available in the libraries based on the media contents. At the time, it seemed reasonable to me that I should discover the solution to the image retrieval problem during the project. Experi ence has certainly demonstrated how far we are as yet from solving this basic problem.

Experimental and clinical evidence demonstrates an intense crosstalk among the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. The central nervous system (CNS) not only has the capacity to affect peripheral immune function, but is also able to sense and process signals from the peripheral immune system. The bi-directional interaction between the CNS and the peripheral immune system has gained great interest as it can help better understand disease pathophysiology as well as improving health and treatment outcomes in patients. On the one hand, inflammatory factors are known to affect CNS functions and to induce neuropsychiatric symptoms, making immune-to-brain communication highly relevant for psychiatric diseases and their treatments. On the other hand, analyzing pathways of brain-to-immune communication will help to understand the pathophysiology of chronic inflammatory disorders and will form the basis for optimizing treatment of these diseases.
