Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a framework that can be used for a range of intervention service delivery models, including those that seek to remediate maladaptive learning, behavioral, or social-emotional deficits before they lead to disability placement, office discipline referrals, significant social-emotional concerns, or self-harm/suicide. The three-tiered MTSS framework offers more intensive interventions and more frequent progress monitoring at each tier. Using MTSS for academics, behavior, social-emotional wellbeing, and suicide prevention promotes uniformity across schools, provides early intervention to students, abides by state guidelines, and recognizes that academic, behavioral, and social-emotional difficulties tend to be interconnected and often do not operate independently of one another. This quick-reference guide presents detailed MTSS flowcharts for academic RTI, behavior (school wide positive behavioral support/SWPBS), social emotional RTI, and suicide prevention. Each flowchart: identifies core curriculum, practices, and programs; suggests universal screening tools; lists criteria for determining whether to advance student to next tier; recommends interventions at each tier; identifies progress monitoring tools and frequency of use. Guidance counselors, teachers, and administrators will find this concise yet comprehensive guide to be an essential tool for supporting students across domains in an organized and coherent fashion.

Of the many issues facing special education (and general education) today, it is difficult to imagine one more important or timely than response to intervention (RTI). Almost overnight RTI has become standard practice across the nation. Unfortunately, RTI remains ill-defined, falls far short of its evidence-based practice goal, is almost invariably misused, and often results in more harm than good. Nevertheless, as a conceptual framework RTI has great potential for ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate, evidence-based instruction. The mission of this handbook is to present a comprehensive and integrated discussion of response to intervention (RTI) and its relation to multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in both special education and general education. Although the two terms are currently used interchangeably, distinct differences exist between them. Therefore, chapters are dedicated to distinguishing the two concepts—RTI and MTSS—and describing each one’s unique role in both general and special education. In addition, the authors recommend a third term, Multi-Tiered Instruction, to differentiate the practices related to the purpose of the specific intervention.

Most Americans agree on the necessity of education reform, but there is little consensus about how this goal might be achieved. The rhetoric of standards and vouchers has occupied center stage, polarizing public opinion and affording little room for reflection on the intangible conditions that make for good schools. Trust in Schools engages this debate with a compelling examination of the importance of social relationships in the successful implementation of school reform. Over the course of three years, Bryk and Schneider, together with a diverse team of other researchers and school practitioners, studied reform in twelve Chicago elementary schools. Each school was undergoing extensive reorganization in response to the Chicago School Reform Act of 1988, which called for greater involvement of parents and local community leaders in their neighborhood schools. Drawing on years longitudinal survey and achievement data, as well as in-depth interviews with principals, teachers, parents, and local community leaders, the authors develop a thorough account of how effective social relationships—which they term relational trust—can serve as a prime resource for school improvement. Using case studies of the network of relationships that make up the school community, Bryk and Schneider examine how the myriad social exchanges that make up daily life in a school community generate, or fail to generate, a successful educational environment. The personal dynamics among teachers, students, and their parents, for example, influence whether students regularly attend school and sustain their efforts in the difficult task of learning. In schools characterized by high relational trust, educators were more likely to experiment with new practices and work together with parents to advance improvements. As a result, these schools were also more likely to demonstrate marked gains in student learning. In contrast, schools with weak trust relations saw virtually no improvement in their reading or mathematics scores. Trust in Schools demonstrates convincingly that the quality of social relationships operating in and around schools is central to their functioning, and strongly predicts positive student outcomes. This book offer insights into how trust can be built and sustained in school communities, and identifies some features of public school systems that can impede such development. Bryk and Schneider show how a broad base of trust across a school community can provide a critical resource as education professional and parents embark on major school reforms. The use of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in schools has implications for social and cultural development. It provides the opportunity for empowerment and inclusion of students who are often overlooked or struggling to adapt, such as multilingual, neurodiverse, and sexually exploited students. Increased competency in understanding and utilizing MTSS may provide teachers with opportunities for professional development. Effective teacher training is often necessary for creating affirming, safe, and equitable educational environments. Further research into the MTSS framework may challenge educators to include social and restorative justice practices in the classroom. Frameworks for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Trauma-Informed Educational Settings highlights the importance of anti-racism, cultural competence, and social-emotional learning in education settings. It explores the role of social justice and restorative justice in building trauma-informed educational settings. Covering topics such as anti-racist education, family therapy, and math anxiety, this book is an excellent resource for school administrators, policymakers, educators, researchers, academicians, and more.
