Abstract: "With the wealth of bandwidth that is now available through fiber technologies and the increased processing speeds of computers, distributed, real-time, multi-user applications have gained much attention. Unfortunately, many people still do not have access to the necessary high bandwidth communication lines or the high processing capabilities needed for these applications. Traditionally, virtual reality (VR) has only been available to those people not hampered by these constraints. However, we believe that a person may use low bandwidth lines (such as analog, voice-grade lines), along with relatively low processing speeds (such as personal computers (PCs)), to participate in distributed, interactive, multi-user, real-time VR environments. To verify our belief, we have designed and implemented an interaction control model, which runs on a 486 PC over a 9600 baud link. This model reduces bandwidth consumption by using a modular design for the interaction domain. It uses a remote procedure call platform to enchance distributed actions and addresses the conflicting goals of real-time interaction with low bandwidth and low processing capabilities. The implementation runs as a library to extend the functionality of the WorldToolKit package, a VR software package for personal computers created by Sense8 Corporation."

Instrumentation, Control and Automation of Water and Wastewater Treatment and Transport Systems 1993 comprises a selection of manuscripts on the development of control strategies and their applications and on the status and future directions of Instrumentation, Control, and Automation (ICA) in the water and wastewater industry. The book starts by providing an overview of the status, the constraints and the future prospects for ICA in water and wastewater treatment and transport based on the survey responses of experts from 16 different countries. The text continues by presenting the need for dynamic modeling and simulation software to assist operations staff in developing effective instrumentation control strategies and to provide a training environment for the evaluation of such strategies. The book also covers the critical variables in system success; the use of an enterprise-wide computing that emphasizes the importance of strategic planning, performance measures, and human factors associated with the suggested implementation of applied technology; and the use of part-time unmanned operation at a large wastewater treatment plant. A functional approach based on the utility's water and wastewater functional requirements; the collection system monitoring and control; water distribution and control systems; dynamic modeling and simulation; and process control strategy and development are also considered. This book will be beneficial to biochemists, wastewater technologists, and public health authorities.

Multi-agent Systems (MAS) are one of the most exciting research areas in Artificial Intelligence meanwhile Environmental Studies is a research area of strategic interest. Both areas can provide society with solutions for many real applications, in order to use and protect the environment. Human activities imply intervention into nature, but properly managed, these interventions can not be only ecologically sound but also favourable to the sustainable development of civilisation. The encounter between these fields is a new challenge for many researchers of both communities. This book presents a comprehensive reference of state-of-the-art efforts. Specifically, it presents current and future ways in which adaptive information technologies, techniques, protocols and architectures, such as software agent technologies and multi-agent systems, can be used to support the development of real-world agent-based systems in the area of e-Environment.

This is the proceedings of the Third Conference on Interdisciplinary Applications of Kinematics (IAK 2018) held in Lima, Peru, March 5–7, 2018. The conference brought together scientists from several research fields, such as computational kinematics, multibody systems, industrial machines, robotics, biomechanics, mechatronics, computational chemistry, and vibration analysis, and embraced all key aspects of kinematics, namely, theoretical methods, modeling, optimization, experimental validation, industrial applications, and design. Kinematics is an exciting area of computational mechanics and plays a central role in a great variety of fields and industrial applications nowadays. Apart from research in pure kinematics, the field deals with problems of practical relevance that need to be solved in an interdisciplinary manner in order for new technologies to develop. The results presented in this book should be of interest for practicing and research engineers as well asPh.D. students from the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, and computer graphics.

Dynamic Simulation and Virtual Reality in Hydrology and Water Resources Management focuses on the understanding, use, and application of system dynamics simulation and virtual reality approaches for modeling the spatial and temporal behavior of natural and managed hydro-environmental systems. The book discusses concepts of systems thinking and system dynamics approach, and it furthers understanding of the dynamic behavior of natural and engineering systems using feedbacks and dynamic simulation. Numerous examples of models built using different system dynamics simulation modeling environments are provided. It also introduces concepts related to computer animation and virtual reality–based immersive modeling. Applications of systems dynamics, simulation with animation, and virtual reality approaches for modeling and management of hydro-environmental systems are illustrated through case studies. This text is ideal for water resources professionals, graduate students, hydrologic modelers, and engineers who are interested in systems thinking, dynamic simulation, and virtual reality modeling approaches.
