This book presents the theory, analysis, and design of multiband dual-function microwave and millimeter-wave CMOS radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) filter-switches capable of simultaneous switching and filtering, which are relevant for advanced multiband RF systems. Typical microwave and millimeter-wave switches are designed only for switching purposes without considering frequency selectivity or filtering. A separate filter is normally needed to be used with a switch to provide a filtering function. This conventional design approach hence leads to higher insertion loss, larger size and higher cost for RF systems. RF systems operating over multiple bands provide numerous advantages and offer more capabilities for communications and sensing than their single-band counterparts. A concurrent multiband system enables one single system to be used over multiple bands simultaneously, leading to optimum size, cost, and power consumption, together with ease of system implementation. Truly concurrent multiband systems require many components to work on multiple bands simultaneously, including concurrent multiband switches. Microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits using silicon-based CMOS (or related BiCMOS) RFICs are less expensive and better suited to direct integration with digital ICs than those using III-V compound semiconductor devices. CMOS RFICs are also small and offer low power consumption, making them suitable for portable battery-operated systems. Accordingly, CMOS RFICs are very attractive for RF systems and are the principal choice for commercial wireless markets. The content is divided into six chapters, the first four of which describe and address band-pass, high-pass, and low-pass filters, as well as multiband band-pass filters, the fundamentals of switches, and various switch architectures including single-pole single-throw (SPST), single-pole double-throw (SPDT), transmit/receive (T/R), and ultra-high-isolation switches, the fundamentals and models of MOSFETs used in the design of switches, and the essentials of CMOS RFIC design needed for the filter-switches presented in this book. In turn, the fifth chapter presents the core of the book, namely the design, simulation, and measurement of various CMOS dual-band dual-function SPDT and T/R switches capable of concurrent switching and filtering, as examples to illustrate the design of multiband dual-function filter-switches. These components operate in two different frequency bands centered at approximately 40 and 60 GHz and 24 and 60 GHz. Lastly, a summary and conclusion are provided in Chapter 6.

Advanced concepts for wireless technologies present a vision of technology that is embedded in our surroundings and practically invisible. From established radio techniques like GSM, 802.11 or Bluetooth to more emerging technologies, such as Ultra Wide Band and smart dust motes, a common denominator for future progress is the underlying integrated circuit technology. Wireless Technologies responds to the explosive growth of standard cellular radios and radically different wireless applications by presenting new architectural and circuit solutions engineers can use to solve modern design problems. This reference addresses state-of-the art CMOS design in the context of emerging wireless applications, including 3G/4G cellular telephony, wireless sensor networks, and wireless medical application. Written by top international experts specializing in both the IC industry and academia, this carefully edited work uncovers new design opportunities in body area networks, medical implants, satellite communications, automobile radar detection, and wearable electronics. The book is divided into three sections: wireless system perspectives, chip architecture and implementation issues, and devices and technologies used to fabricate wireless integrated circuits. Contributors address key issues in the development of future silicon-based systems, such as scale of integration, ultra-low power dissipation, and the integration of heterogeneous circuit design style and processes onto one substrate. Wireless sensor network systems are now being applied in critical applications in commerce, healthcare, and security. This reference, which contains 25 practical and scientifically rigorous articles, provides the knowledge communications engineers need to design innovative methodologies at the circuit and system level.

This book helps engineers to grasp fundamental theories and design principles by presenting physical and intuitive explanations of switched-capacitor circuits. Numerous circuit examples are discussed and the author emphasizes the most important and fundamental principles involved in implementing state-of-the-art switched-capacitor circuits for analog signal processing and power management applications. Throughout the book, the author presents numerous step-by-step tutorials and gives practical design examples. While some quantitative analysis is necessary to understand underlying concepts, tedious mathematical equations and formal proofs are avoided. An intuitive appreciation for switched-capacitor circuits is achieved. Much of the existing information on contemporary switched-capacitor circuit applications is in the form of applications notes and data sheets for various switched-capacitor ICs. This book compiles such information in a single volume and coherently organizes and structures it. The author has his own website at www.mingliangliu.com * Step-by-step tutorials which emphasize the most fundamental principals of switched-capacitor circuits * Few tedious mathematical equations * The first easy-to-understand compilation on this subject--most information available is not very cohesive

Delivering the best possible solution for phase noise and outputpower efficiency in oscillators This complete and thorough analysis of microwave oscillatorsinvestigates all aspects of design, with particular emphasis onoperating conditions, choice of resonators and transistors, phasenoise, and output power. It covers both bipolar transistors andFETs. Following the authors' guidance, readers learn how to designmicrowave oscillators and VCOs that can be tuned over a very widefrequency range, yet have good phase noise, are low cost, and aresmall in size. All the essential topics in oscillator design anddevelopment are covered, including: * Device and resonator technology * Study of noise sources * Analysis methods * Design, calculation, and optimization methodologies * Practical design of single and coupled oscillators While most of the current literature in the field concentrates onclassic design strategies based on measurements, simulation, andoptimization of output power and phase noise, this text offers aunique approach that focuses on the complete understanding of thedesign process. The material demonstrates important design rulesstarting with the selection of best oscillator topology, choice oftransistors, and complete phase noise analysis that leads tooptimum performance of all relevant oscillator features. Alsoincluded are CMOS oscillators, which recently have become importantin cellular applications. For readers interested in specializedapplications and topics, a full chapter provides all the necessaryreferences. The contents of the text fall into two major categories: * Chapters 1 through 9 deal with a very detailed and expandedsingle resonator oscillator, including a thorough treatment of bothnonlinear analysis and phase noise * Chapters 10 and 11 use the knowledge obtained and apply it tomultiple coupled oscillators (synchronized oscillators) This text is partially based on research sponsored by the DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the United StatesArmy and conducted by Synergy Microwave Corporation. With thewealth of information provided for the analysis and practicaldesign of single and synchronized low-noise microwave oscillators,it is recommended reading for all RF microwave engineers. Inaddition, the text's comprehensive, step-by-step approach makes itan excellent graduate-level textbook.
