This book presents a reflection on the debate between cultural multiculturalism and interculturalism by reviewing the main sociological and philosophical approaches that mark it. It opens with reflections on liberalism and neo-communitarianism, from John Rawls to Charles Taylor, Jurgen Habermas and Will Kymlicka, and then delves into the multicultural model of integration, examining its theoretical foundations, internal differences and political applications. Multiculturalism is a prevalent worldwide societal phenomenon. Aspects of our modern life, such as migration, economic globalization, multicultural policies, and cross-border travel and communication have made intercultural contacts inevitable. High numbers of multicultural individuals (23-43% of the population by some estimates) can be found in many nations where migration has been strong (e.g., Australia, U.S., Western Europe, Singapore) or where there is a history of colonization (e.g., Hong Kong). This book examines the relationship between two policy approaches for managing the cultural diversity of contemporary societies: interculturalism and multiculturalism.
