MULTINATIONAL STRATEGIC ALLIANCES Strategic alliances are one of the most significant tools used today in business, especially by multinational firms. It is seen by business managers as the way to grow their organizations, especially when faced by downsizing and cutbacks. Such alliances have certainly been around for a long time, and surveys show that today the majority of large organizations use them. Almost all multinational firms have considered them. However, what has changed in today’s working climate is their breadth and frequency of use, and their complexity. This highlights the need for a comprehensive guide such as this. Indeed, research shows that over 70% of strategic alliances fail to deliver the results that were intended from the outset. What makes this book so useful is that it covers a broader range of alliances and has more current case studies than other books currently available. In addition, this comprehensive introduction to the subject provides a base of practical ‘how-to-do-it’ material and specific decision models covering determining strategic fit, negotiating strategic alliances and selecting compatible partners, formulating type and structure of alliances in light of operational fit, and making strategic alliances work. The book also explores other options instead of alliances such as wholly-owned multinational expansion and exporting, and has major sections on understanding and managing cross-cultural diversity, communications and leadership. Case studies include General Motors in China, British Airways and American Airlines, Airbus Industrie, a celluar phone venture in Tashkent, British Petroleum/Mobil in Europe, and Puyi-Briggs and Straton Engine Corporation in China. The systematic processes, contingency frameworks, best practices guidelines and situation analysis checklists given in this book make it an indispensable guide for managers and senior managers no matter what the size of their enterprise, especially those involved in international marketing, planning and management. It is also relevant to consultants and MBA and post-graduate students interested in the development, management and other strategic issues involved in multinational strategic alliances. Previous volumes in the Wiley Series in Practical Strategy are: Segev: Business Unit Strategy 0-471-97164-2 Hedberg et al: Virtual Organizations and Beyond 0-471-97493-5 McNamee: Strategic Market Planning 0-471-97932-5 Hussey and Jenster: Competitor Intelligence 0-471-98407-8 The aim of this series is to provide managers with books on strategy, strategic management and strategic change, which are helpful, practical, and provide guidance for the application of sound concepts in real situations.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: International Business Strategy, language: English, abstract: Over the past 30 years, there were two main vehicles through which companies have globalised: international strategic alliances and cross-border Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As). Both vehicles are instruments used by companies to increase their global reach and competitiveness. In the new economy, alliances and M&As seem to be the normal way of doing business. Although strategic alliances and M&As are not a recent phenomena, their pace of growth and the variety of their forms has been increasing. When dealing with strategic alliances and M&As, four main questions arise: What are the drivers of strategic alliances and M&As? Which sources of success and failure offer these two growth vehicles? Are there specific determinants that are decisive in the process of establishing a strategic alliance or doing a merger or acquisition? And why do so many M&A fail? To answer these questions chapter 1 deals with the rationale for strategic alliances and M&As by outlining key points of the past development. Chapter two clarifies the different types of international alliances and their advantages and disadvantages. It also describes success criteria being important for forming strategic alliances by clarifying the major steps in analysing strategic alliances. To combine theory and praxis, chapter three ends with a short case study about the Renault-Nissan Alliance stating the key success factors. The chapter three is about cross-border M&As by focussing on their the two phases - the pre-acquisition phase and the post-acquisition phase. It describes how companies should decide, give value and negotiate the deal and underlines important managerial processes involved in the integration of the merged company. By analysing the rea

Global Business Alliances written by Refik Culpan and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-03-30 with Business & Economics categories.

Forging business alliances can vitalize corporate strategies. This book is a road map to the concepts and theories underlying successful business alliances in four critical industries: automobile manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, airlines, and telecommunications. Dr. Culpan offers the essentials of global partnering as seen from a strategic management viewpoint. He examines joint ventures, non-equity alliances, and business options designed to give a competitive edge over other allied firms. New conceptual models help to clarify various strategies and collaborative processes. By comparing the four major industries—and specific companies in each—this study explores not only the uniqueness of its subjects, but also the common grounds of various multinationals. Through key insights and ideas, the possibilities and realities of corporate alliances begin to emerge. Attention is also paid to the decision-making process as it relates cooperative ventures, as well as to the inevitable managerial challenges of forming, and managing, strategic alliances. The result is an astute analysis ideal for teachers, students, and strategists seeking fresh insights into the workings and benefits of corporate alliance.
