A discrete-time survival model (the complementary log-log model) is used to model parity progression from woman's own birth to first marriage, from first marriage to first birth, from first birth to second birth, and so on, with one model for each parity transition. Predictor variables in each model include woman's age and duration in parity as well as socioeconomic characteristics. The models are applied to birth history data. Collectively the models yield estimates of marriage and birth probabilities by age, parity, and duration in parity, denoted Pait, by socioeconomic characteristics. The probabilities Pait are multivariate in the sense that they can be tabulated by one socioeconomic characteristic while holding other socioeconomic characteristics constant. The probabilities Pait allow construction of a life table that follows women by age, parity, and duration in parity from age 10 to age 50 one year at a time. This life table is referred to as a "global life table," because it spans all ages, parities, and durations in parity within the reproductive age span. Because the Pait are multivariate, the global life table is also multivariate, as are all measures derived from it. The derived measures considered here include both period and cohort estimates of parity progression ratios (PPRs), age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs), mean and median ages at first marriage, mean and median closed birth intervals, mean and median ages at childbearing (both overall and by child's birth order), total fertility rate (TFR), and total marital fertility rate (TMFR). The methodology is tested on data from the 2003 Demographic and Health Survey of the Philippines.

The last 35 years or so have witnessed a dramatic shift in the demography of many developing countries. Before 1960, there were substantial improvements in life expectancy, but fertility declines were very rare. Few people used modern contraceptives, and couples had large families. Since 1960, however, fertility rates have fallen in virtually every major geographic region of the world, for almost all political, social, and economic groups. What factors are responsible for the sharp decline in fertility? What role do child survival programs or family programs play in fertility declines? Casual observation suggests that a decline in infant and child mortality is the most important cause, but there is surprisingly little hard evidence for this conclusion. The papers in this volume explore the theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions of the fertility-mortality relationship. It includes several detailed case studies based on contemporary data from developing countries and on historical data from Europe and the United States.

Using data from the 1980 Malaysian census, this paper reports on a project that tests methodology for measuring the impact of family planning programs on fertility. It also develops an efficiency measure that could be used by program administrators for adjusting program management. In the 1st phase of the project, subnational aggregate data are analyzed using a multivariate areal analysis technic. Based on the regression results an efficiency index was constructed for each sub-unit, the lowest administrative program unit. Sub-units were than ranked in order from the most efficient to the least. A sample from the 2 extreme quartiles was used to analyze differential performance using clinical and other selected data. A multivariate analysis of program and non-program inputs decomposed the relative contribution of socioeconomic development and family planning inputs on fertility. The study concludes that a strong cultural factor affects fertility; social mobility is essential in promoting fertility decline. Family planning efforts directly affect fertility and need to be strengthened. Policies to improve living conditions and educational status will raise contraceptive prevalence. In-depth case studies could help to characterize the least efficient units. Efforts should be made to develop simple statistical estimation technics for multivariate areal analysis to overcome unequal areal sizes, as current regression analysis tends to have biased estimates without appropriate weighting.

A Regional Workshop on techniques of Analysis of World Fertility Survey (WFS) Data was held in November-December 1978 with the objective of providing the national staff, directly responsible for future analysis of their WFS and related data, intensive training in the statistical techniques required for the fulfillment of such advanced research work. In the effort to achieve the objective, the Workshop involved a series of lectures on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the statistical techniques related to the evaluation of data, the estimation of fertility and multivariate analysis and laboratory exercises in the application of those techniques to selected case studies. It was anticipated that following the completion of the Workshop each participant would train other demographers in their own countries who would also be involved in indepth analyses of their WFS country data. The Workshop was financially supported by a grant from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Along with information concerning the organization and evaluation of the workshop, this report includes Workshop background papers which deal with the following: screening procedures for detecting errors in maternity history data; assessment of the validity of fertility trend estimates from maternity histories; the relational Gompertz model of fertility by age of woman; and application of the relational Gompertz model of fertility; a technical note on the own-children method of fertility estimation and its application ot the 1974 Fiji Fertility Survey; some problems in the measurement and analysis of fertility preferences from WFS 1st country reports; an overview of the demographic techniques discussed at the Regional Workshop; an overview of multivariate techniques in the analysis of survey data; and regression analysis.

This study offers a method for removing the effects of tempo distortions from the total fertility rate (TFR). The aim is to advance understanding of the level and trend of past fertility for generating better projections. Correcting for period effects is important due to the heavy reliance on TFR as a demographic measure. TFR is an average of the number of births a woman would have during her reproductive years (ages 15-49 years). TFR should reflect the changes in the timing of childbearing, the relationships between period and cohort measures, the nature and validity of period measures, and the extent to which fertility should include controls for age, parity, duration of marriage, or other demographic factors. Life table measures that standardize for parity or duration in parity do not address the distortions of changes in the timing of childbearing. A decline in the cohort size leads to changes in the mean age of childbearing that do not represent true tempo effects. The proposed method assumes fertility changes by period, duration since last birth, parity, and age, but not by cohort. It is calculated by dividing the observed TFR at each birth order by 1 minus the change in mean age at childbearing at order "i" during the year. Situations include where only births of order one occur, all women in every birth cohort have their first births at a single exact age, all births occur at equal intervals during the year, and all cohorts have the same number of women. The model is tested for the US and Taiwan. The method adjusts for the later age at childbearing and reveals close to replacement fertility in the 1970s and 1980s in the US.

Socio-economic policy planning and monitoring requires accurate data on births, deaths and population, in order to plan effectively for provision of health, education, employment and social security services. This publication contains detailed information on the compilation of demographic data using a range of complementary methods which can be combined to suit national conditions. Topics covered include: planning collection of fertility and mortality data; fieldwork, data processing and archiving; evaluation, estimation and dissemination; civil registration records, censuses and surveys as data sources.

Abstract: What we will call the age-based TMFR is computed conventionally by adding up age-specific marital fertility rates in the hope of estimating the number of children ever born to a woman who is married throughout her childbearing years. Demographers have long been strongly skeptical about this quantity because it normally indicates implausibly many children. Our analysis of data from the Romanian GGS confirms this finding, and we propose an alternative duration-based TMFR computed in the spirit of parity-progression ratios. At the same time, we extend the method to cover any type of living arrangement (cohabitation, marriage, non-partnered arrangement, and so on). Because each resulting total union-type fertility rate (TUFR) explicitly accounts for the living arrangement, it improves on the conventional total fertility rate (TFR), which does not. We embed the investigation in an event-history analysis with fixed and time-varying control covariates and find patterns of relative risks f
