This book details an intensive case study of an Indian state that is more or less representative of the Muslim minorities in the country as a whole. The northern Indian province under study has a fair amount of Muslim population with a good number of educational institutions at different levels and grades. These institutions provide both traditional and modern education, which highlights the delicacies of the problems faced when promoting higher education in a comprehensive and inclusive way. This book is a detailed investigation based on a case study and surveys and interaction with many stakeholders including students, teachers and principals. The findings presented here will be useful in reshaping and revamping minority higher education plans in India, as well as policies related to these institutions.

They have been found most educationally backward community at national level and Government of India declared them ‘National Educationally Backward Minority’ in 1993 but the fate of Indian Muslims has not changed in the last 62 years of independence as they are again found most deprived community of the country by Sachar Committee. 21st century higher education faces immense changes—from the broad impact of globalization to the implications of massification and the growth of enrollments worldwide. The International Imperative in Higher Education focuses on most of the central elements affecting universities worldwide. Included among the themes analyzed are global issues such as corruption, the continuing impact of the brain drain and the phenomenon of brain exchange, the role of English in internationalization, changes in the environment for publishing and knowledge distribution, and academic freedom. The specific elements of internationalization, such as growing commercialization, and the role of agents and recruiters as a part of global student flows are considered. The role of the academic profession in a rapidly changing university environment is also discussed. Special attention is paid to China and India, the world’s two largest academic systems, and the specific challenges faced by them. This book consists of 40 concise essays analyzing key aspects of global higher education. They bring together broad analysis and an underlying concern for the public good aspects of higher education in a comparative and international framework.

Indian Muslim S After Liberalization written by Maidul Islam and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-13 with Religion categories.

Close to the turn of the century and almost 45 years after Independence, India opened its doors to free-market liberalization. Although meant as the promise to a better economic tomorrow, three decades later, many feel betrayed by the economic changes ushered in by this new financial era. Here is a book that probes whether India’s economic reforms have aided the development of Indian Muslims who have historically been denied the fruits of economic development. Maidul Islam points out that in current political discourse, the ‘Muslim question’ in India is not articulated in terms of demands for equity. Instead, the political leadership camouflages real issues of backwardness, prejudice, and social exclusion with the rhetoric of identity and security. Historically informed, empirically grounded, and with robust analytical rigour, the book tries to explore connections between multiple forms of Muslim marginalization, the socio-economic realities facing the community, and the formation of modern Muslim identity in the country. At a time when post-liberalization economic policies have created economic inequality and joblessness for significant sections of the population including Muslims, the book proposes working towards a radical democratic deepening in India.

This book acquaints the reader to the often invisible-ized practices and policies under the rhetoric of ‘inclusion’, through theoretical and empirical analysis. It emphasizes on the complexities of education policies in a multicultural state by identifying the challenges to the idea of ‘inclusion’ illuminated through judicial interventions, policy-frameworks and everyday experiences of individuals. Higher education is imperative to empowerment in socially stratified societies marred with deep inequalities like India and many other multicultural countries. Disputes over inclusion remains a critical feature in Indian higher education sector, as it is viewed as facilitating access to economic opportunities and providing vertical mobility for individuals belonging to marginalized communities. Higher education empowers, and expands individual horizons of thought and ideas of freedom, dignity, equality, enabling individuals to participate actively in the political-sociological discourses in democratic polity. Therefore, policy makers, political theorists and educationists have been examining the question of inclusion and education as public-good. Contemporary India has witnessed an unprecedented attack on academic freedom, free exchange of ideas and expressions, challenging the very idea of inclusion and inclusiveness.

Affirmative Action Matters written by Laura Dudley Jenkins and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-04 with Education categories.

Affirmative Action Matters focuses specifically on affirmative action policies in higher education admissions, the sphere that has been the most controversial in many of the nations that have such policies. It brings together distinguished scholars from diverse nations to examine and discuss the historical, political and philosophical contexts of affirmative action and clarify policy developments to further the meaningful equality of educational opportunity. This unique volume includes both well established and emerging policies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, policies which developed under a variety of political systems and target a range of underrepresented groups, based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, social background, or region. Accessible and thought provoking case studies of affirmative action demonstrate that such policies are expanding to different countries and target populations. While some countries, such as India, have affirmative action policies that predate those in the United States, affirmative action is a recent development in countries such as Brazil and France. Legal or political pressures to move away from explicitly race-based policies in several countries have complicated affirmative action and make this assessment of international alternatives particularly timely. New or newly modified policies target a variety of disadvantaged groups, based on geography, class, or caste, in addition to race or sex. International scholars in six countries spanning five continents offer insights into their own countries’ experiences to examine the implications of policy shifts from race toward other categories of disadvantage, to consider best practices in student admission policies, and to assess the future of affirmative action.
