Excerpt from Mutualism: A Synthesis Some years ago - in 1912, I think it was - I asked a well-known banker, "What would you say if the Emperor of China were to issue an edict to-morrow nationalizing all private banks and insurance companies?" "I should say," replied my friend, "that in that case the Emperor of China had lived up to his celestial reputation. But I hope to goodness he won't. It would have a demoralizing effect on his neighbours. Seriously, I have myself often thought how immensely simple it would be for the Government to take over the insurance companies." "Then why not the banks too?" I asked. "That is of course not quite so simple. - Though why not," he went on briskly, "if the thing were properly managed? I wouldn't mind doing it myself, if they made me boss of the bank of China!" I have great confidence in the judgment of my banker-friend. So I went my way, and pondered his words in my heart. Then came the war, and shook us all up and out of our everyday routine, and made straight much that was crooked, and possible much that formerly had seemed impossible. And I was beginning to think over my old idea, when lo! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mutualisms, interactions between two species that benefit both of them, have long captured the public imagination. Their influence transcends levels of biological organisation from cells to populations, communities, and ecosystems. Focusing on a range of ecological and evolutionary aspects over different scales (from individual to ecosystem), the chapters in this book provide expert coverage of our current understanding of mutualism whilst highlighting the most important questions that remain to be answered.

Mutualistic Networks written by Jordi Bascompte and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Mutualism (Biology) categories.

Mutualistic interactions among plants and animals have played a paramount role in shaping biodiversity. Yet the majority of studies on mutualistic interactions have involved only a few species, as opposed to broader mutual connections between communities of organisms. Mutualistic Networks is the first book to comprehensively explore this burgeoning field. Integrating different approaches, from the statistical description of network structures to the development of new analytical frameworks, Jordi Bascompte and Pedro Jordano describe the architecture of these mutualistic networks and show their importance for the robustness of biodiversity and the coevolutionary process. Making a case for why we should care about mutualisms and their complex networks, this book offers a new perspective on the study and synthesis of this growing area for ecologists and evolutionary biologists. It will serve as the standard reference for all future work on mutualistic interactions in biological communities.

Mutualisms, interactions between two species that benefit both of them, have long captured the public imagination. Their influence transcends levels of biological organization from cells to populations, communities, and ecosystems. Mutualistic symbioses were crucial to the origin of eukaryotic cells, and perhaps to the invasion of land. Mutualisms occur in every terrestrial and aquatic habitat; indeed, ecologists now believe that almost every species on Earth is involved directly or indirectly in one or more of these interactions. Mutualisms are essential to the reproduction and survival of virtually all organisms, as well as to nutrient cycles in ecosystems. Furthermore, the key ecosystem services that mutualists provide mean that they are increasingly being considered as conservation priorities, ironically at the same time as the acute risks to their ecological and evolutionary persistence are increasingly being identified. This volume, the first general work on mutualism to appear in almost thirty years, provides a detailed and conceptually-oriented overview of the subject. Focusing on a range of ecological and evolutionary aspects over different scales (from individual to ecosystem), the chapters in this book provide expert coverage of our current understanding of mutualism whilst highlighting the most important questions that remain to be answered. In bringing together a diverse team of expert contributors, this novel text captures the excitement of a dynamic field that will help to define its future research agenda.

Defensive Mutualism In Microbial Symbiosis written by James F. White Jr. and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-26 with Science categories.

Anemones and fish, ants and acacia trees, fungus and trees, buffaloes and oxpeckers--each of these unlikely duos is an inimitable partnership in which the species’ coexistence is mutually beneficial. More specifically, they represent examples of defensive mutualism, when one species receives protection against predators or parasites in exchange for offering shelter or food to its partner species. Explores the Diverse Range of Defensive Mutualisms Involving Microbial Symbionts The past 20 years, since this phenomenon first began receiving attention, have been marked by a deluge of research in a variety of organism kingdoms and much has been discovered about this intriguing behavior. Defensive Mutualism in Microbial Symbiosis includes basic ecological and biological information on defensive mutualisms, explores how they function, and evaluates how they have evolved. It also looks at the implications of symbiosis defensive compounds as a new frontier in bioexploration for drug and natural product discovery--the first book to explore this possibility. Chapters Written by Field Authorities The book expands the concept of defensive mutualisms to evaluate defense against environmental abiotic and biotic stresses. Addressing the topic of defensive mutualisms in microbial symbiosis across this wide spectrum, it includes chapters on defensive mutualistic associations involving multiple kingdoms of organisms in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems--plant, animal, fungi, bacteria, and protozoans. Defensive Mutualism in Microbial Symbiosis unifies scattered findings into a single compendium, providing a valuable reference for field researchers and those in academia to assimilate and acquire a knowledgeable perspective on defensive mutualism, particularly those involving microbial partners.
