The muzzle blast simulator (MBS) project was initiated in 1984 with the objective of providing a sound generator for the assessment of the performance of hearing protection devices. Other potential applications of the MBS include the study of the subjective and physiological response to blast waves and its use as a training tool. This report presents findings of a feasibility study undertaken to determine the hardware and software requirements for the successful completion of the original MBS design work. It first reviews the context of the MBS project, then assesses its current status and its critical success factors and issues. This is followed by system requirements of the new MBS system, such as system data, system functions, user interface, and hardware. The next two chapters address the important software and hardware issues such as languages, data base management systems, control and management functions, waveform processing functions, interfaces, and hardware components. Finally, the cost efficiency of the MBS project is discussed and implementation scenarios and cost benefits of the project are assessed.

The object of this research program is to determine the most feasible means of obtaining a nuclear blast simulator which will reproduce the transient flow field associated with the 500 psig. overpressure range of large nuclear weapon detonations. The blast simulator is of the general purpose type and is characterized by a traveling shock wave followed by a flowing gas. The test section is of the order of 25 x 50 feet in section and contains, in addition to the gas flow region, a soil container or region in which air induced stress waves can be generated. Two concepts were considered the most feasible. One is the standard shock tube concept which consists of a long tube, closed at one end, in which explosives are distributed over a large region and detonated. The other is the space variable energy input shock tube concept which consists of a long tube, open at both ends, in which explosives are distributed in a non-uniform manner. The resulting detonation yields longitudinal pressure gradients which are similar to the wave forms of interest. Both of these concepts simulate the overpressure and dynamic pressure variation in the test section satisfactorily. Cost estimates for these two concepts were made for a variety of facility sizes and blast wave parameters. (Author).

A large number of potential blast simulator concepts were evaluated and their performance char acteristics were determined. Preliminary designs were made for those concepts which possessed the best over-all performance characteristics and estimates of their economic feasibility were established. Volume II consists of several appendices that are referenced in Vol. I, which give the details of the feasibility study analysis. (Author).

Results of the following studies are presented: analytical determination of overpressure maps resulting from firing Howitzers with muzzle blast suppression devices; analyses for evaluating the effects of design parameters comprising the device; techniques for computing the dimensionless pressure and mass rate of discharge - dimensionless time histories in the suppression device; the effect of time which the projectile remains in the suppression device; design parameters of the device which create attenuated overpressures in the crew area; a proposed design for the 105mm Howitzer blast suppression device and the stress analysis of the design; an analytical study relating to the directional effects of blast waves.

Feasibility Investigation Of A Permanent Fuel Air Explosive Blast Simulator written by R. T. Sedgwick and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with categories.

Initial results from an investigation to determine the feasibility of using fuel-air-explosives (FAE) to simulate the airblast from a 1 KT nuclear blast are reported. A small scale blast facility was developed and tested. Up to 22.7 kg (50 lbs) of fuel such as propylene oxide can be disseminated through a hemispherical nozzle head containing 600 nozzles to form 9.14 m (30 ft) diameter hemispherical clouds which are subsequently detonated. The measured pressure history and impulse from several experiments were scaled and compared with 1 KT nuclear blast wave data. These initial results indicate that FAE can be used to simulate nuclear blast waves and that continued effort to develop the technology required to design a permanent, reuseable 1 KT FAE nuclear blast wave facility is therefore warranted.
