Black Rainbow written by Rachel Kelly and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-24 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Black Rainbow is the powerful first-person story of one woman's struggle with depression and how she managed to recover from it through the power of poetry. In 1997, Oxford graduate, working mother and Times journalist Rachel Kelly went from feeling mildly anxious to being completely unable to function within the space of just three days. Prescribed antidepressants by her doctor, and supported by her husband and her family, Rachel slowly began to get better, but her anxiety levels remained high, and six years later, as a stay-at-home mother, she suffered a second collapse even worse than the first. Throughout both of Rachel's periods of severe depression, the healing power of poetry became an integral part of her recovery. As someone who had always loved poetry, it became something for Rachel to cling on to in times of need - from repeating short mantras to learning and reciting entire poems - these words and verses became a powerful force for change in her life. In Black Rainbow Rachel analyses why poetry can be one answer to depression, and the book contains a selected 40 of the poems that provided Rachel with solace and comfort during her breakdown and recovery. At a time when mental health problems and depression are becoming more common, and the stigma around such issues is finally being lifted, this book offers a lifeline for anyone seeking to understand depression and seek new ways to treat it. Poetry is free, has no side-effects and, as Rachel can attest, 'prescribing words instead of pills' can be an incredibly powerful remedy.

In this lyrical coming-of-age story about family, sisterhood, music, race, and identity, Mariama J. Lockington draws on some of the emotional truths from her own experiences growing up with an adoptive white family. I am a girl but most days I feel like a question mark. Makeda June Kirkland is eleven years old, adopted, and black. Her parents and big sister are white, and even though she loves her family very much, Makeda often feels left out. When Makeda's family moves from Maryland to New Mexico, she leaves behind her best friend, Lena— the only other adopted black girl she knows— for a new life. In New Mexico, everything is different. At home, Makeda’s sister is too cool to hang out with her anymore and at school, she can’t seem to find one real friend. Through it all, Makeda can’t help but wonder: What would it feel like to grow up with a family that looks like me? Through singing, dreaming, and writing secret messages back and forth with Lena, Makeda might just carve a small place for herself in the world. For Black Girls Like Me is for anyone who has ever asked themselves: How do you figure out where you are going if you don’t know where you came from?

God Colored Me Black is poetry. I desire parents, teachers, aunts, and uncles to memorize it with young children to promote high self-esteem. Growing up in the south, family and friends would tease me about the color of my skin. For some reason, God never allowed me to develop a low self-image. Being darker has been one of my greatest strengths. I chuckle, just thinking about the beauty of my skin. This book will enhance short-sighted parents, siblings as well as individuals of other races. Our complexions are the decision of our creator. We must be grateful for his divine plan. Being Black is so fantastic, and knowing what I know about its dominance helps me understand that God makes no mistakes. I appreciate the opportunity to share this unique content with children who need to know how beautiful they are inside and out.

The Black Bear Inside Me written by Robin Becker and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-29 with Poetry categories.

Becker celebrates the interconnectedness of creatures and places—never losing sight that much will turn out precarious, illusory, provisional. These poems speak, in ardent voices, about our affinities: an articulate, black bear mourns habitat loss; a frail man and failing dog become one; a scientist and her African grey parrot research language acquisition for thirty years. Ecologies interlace, as when a troubled family “sacrifices one member,/ as plants surrender leaves in times of drought.” Becker responds with rage and wit to corporate excess and intractable geo-politics. Love and friendship empower in wry narratives, though time “mows” down our days, though we may never escape “original cruelties.” Tragedies permeating our enmeshed, global identities haunt the book: the massacre of gay youth in Orlando; the terrors facing Cambodian teenagers working fishing boats. Wise, capacious, by turns unsettling and joyous, The Black Bear Inside Me incorporates histories and losses into a luminous present.

Have you ever thought about the things you went through dealing with men? Even if you were not in a serious relationship with them, have you ever just sat and wondered, what was all that about? And it don't stop there. All the thinking I did lead me to write a book sharing it all. The good, the bad, and the ones I wanted to kill. Some of the things they did to me earned me a license to kill. All the pain and tears and pain, and good times. Even the secrets I never told anyone before. Getting older means that I have to be honest with myself and accept what I have went through. I have been verbally and physically abused by men I loved. I have been lied to and ignored by men I believed would protect me. I have been wronged by the ones I shared a bed with. I know what it's like to have your feelings thrown out a 50 story window and watch it splatter in your face. I have been called mean so many times I cannot remember what the count was. One of the reasons why is because of being treated wrong, bothered, stolen from, and caged like a wild animal. I just don't have the patience for such things anymore. I have learned to be straight forward and express my feelings at will. Men don't have a problem with expressing how they feel. So why should I? If you like reading about real life and real people, this is for you. I share some things that might have been better left in my head. But what do I have to hide? Everyone has gone through some things in their lifetime. I just have the guts to tell it!
