My Childhood Memories That Still Haunt Me took a lifetime to write. The author wanted others to know that regardless of how they were brought up or treated by their parents, they can still come through it. He realizes that it was the way he was treated as a child that shaped him as a man. He adds: For years I have been urged by so many people to write a book about my life story. However, I didn’t want to upset my mother, father, and step-father with its contents. Then again, there was the temptation of it possibly being a best seller, along with the thought that as it is a much traumatized account of my childhood, perhaps nobody would accept or believe it to be true. Therefore, it is for this reason that I am compelled to put my life into print. Additionally, I think, having reached the age of 67 years, that if I do not do it now, it never will get done. So here is the finished book, in the hope that you will enjoy reading about all the problems I have had to overcome in order to be who I am today.

'The messy history and brave future of psychotropic drugs' – O Magazine 'Vivid and thought-provoking' – Harper's Magazine 'Ambitious...Slater's depictions of madness are terrifying and fascinating' – USA Today 'Vigorous research and intimate reflection…highly compelling' – Kirkus As our approach to mental illness has oscillated from biological to psychoanalytical and back again, so have our treatments. With the rise of psychopharmacology, an ever-increasing number of people throughout the globe are taking a psychotropic drug, yet nearly seventy years after doctors first began prescribing them, we still don’t really know exactly how or why they work – or don’t work – on what ails our brains. In The Drugs that Changed Our Minds, Lauren Slater offers an explosive account not just of the science but of the people – inventors, detractors and consumers – behind our narcotics, from the earliest, Thorazine and Lithium, up through Prozac, Ecstasy, 'magic mushrooms', the most cutting-edge memory drugs and neural implants. In so doing, she narrates the history of psychiatry itself and illuminates the signature its colourful little capsules have left on millions of brains worldwide, and how these wonder drugs may heal us or hurt us.

"Capacious and rigorous . . . Blue Dreams, like all good histories of medicine, reveals healing to be art as much as science." --Parul Sehgal, New York Times "Terrific." --@MichaelPollan "Ambitious...Slater's depictions of madness are terrifying and fascinating." --USA Today "A vivid and thought-provoking synthesis." --Harper's A groundbreaking and revelatory history of psychotropic drugs, from "a thoroughly exhilarating and entertaining writer" (Washington Post). Although one in five Americans now takes at least one psychotropic drug, the fact remains that nearly seventy years after doctors first began prescribing them, not even their creators understand exactly how or why these drugs work--or don't work--on what ails our brains. Blue Dreams offers the explosive story of the discovery and development of psychiatric medications, as well as the science and the people behind their invention, told by a riveting writer and psychologist who shares her own experience with the highs and lows of psychiatric drugs. Lauren Slater's revelatory account charts psychiatry's journey from its earliest drugs, Thorazine and lithium, up through Prozac and other major antidepressants of the present. Blue Dreams also chronicles experimental treatments involving Ecstasy, magic mushrooms, the most cutting-edge memory drugs, placebos, and even neural implants. In her thorough analysis of each treatment, Slater asks three fundamental questions: how was the drug born, how does it work (or fail to work), and what does it reveal about the ailments it is meant to treat? Fearlessly weaving her own intimate experiences into comprehensive and wide-ranging research, Slater narrates a personal history of psychiatry itself. In the process, her powerful and groundbreaking exploration casts modern psychiatry's ubiquitous wonder drugs in a new light, revealing their ability to heal us or hurt us, and proving an indispensable resource not only for those with a psychotropic prescription but for anyone who hopes to understand the limits of what we know about the human brain and the possibilities for future treatments.

At the turn of the nineteenth century, a widespread migration took place as a result of British colonialism. This migration was known as the Indian diaspora. It was a time when millions of East Indians would jump ship and leave India to be taken as indentured laborers to the far corners of the world to Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, and the West Indies—Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, and Guyana. The circumstances that surrounded this for many of the migrants were poverty, famine, and hopelessness. In the case of those sailing to Trinidad, it was under the lure of “chenee dad”—the land where sugar flows. Bombay Kay Dulahin is a story beyond the grasp of the historians. It is one woman’s journey of overcoming the unthinkable through a vision and a dream. She was the daughter of East Indian immigrants in the emerging cosmopolitan society of Trinidad and Tobago. Cast off into an arranged marriage at the age of sixteen and possessing no more than a first-grade education, her strength, courage, and passion drive her to keep her vision and dream of breaking social and gender norms. The book discusses traditional East Indian arranged marriages, the age-old Hindu caste-system structure and traditions. It is a story that shows there are no boundaries and borders when it comes to the resiliency of human endurance, passion, and a mother’s unconditional love, ensuring that her loved ones and family are influenced positively for generations to come. A story about love, faith, and hope.

Female Sexual Abuse Of Children written by Michele Elliott and has been published by Guilford Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-05-02 with Psychology categories.

This courageous and powerful book is a first step in addressing the secrecy, distress, anger, and fear surrounding female sexual abuse of children. Refuting the rationales for our lack of attention to the problem and contradicting some commonly held beliefs about sexual abuse, it combines accounts from survivors with input from professionals working with both survivors and abusers. Part I presents contributions from professionals who discuss aspects of female sexual abuse ranging from impact and treatment issues for victims of childhood sexual abuse by female perpetrators to the paradox of women who sexually abuse children. The second part is devoted to survivors--it presents stories from both men and women, then provides self-help guidelines for both. The book concludes with a valuable section on resources which includes a review of the existing literature on female child molestation as well as a listing of pertinent books and help organizations. FEMALE SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN also addresses the controversial issue of current statistics that show that female sexual abuse is very rare and the question of whether it is being underreported due to fear from survivors that they will not be believed or supported. Regardless of the true magnitude of this problem, secrecy or denial about any aspect of child abuse must be avoided. Whatever future studies may show about this problem, it will not diminish this book's importance in taking the step of exploring this issue.

The Kindness Habit written by Christopher Dines and has been published by Riverbank Books UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-07 with Psychology categories.

The Kindness Habit is a warm, compassionate and open dialogue between Christopher Dines, Dr Barbara Mariposa and an anonymous fellow traveller on the road to recovery. The authors share their experience of letting go of “false friends” (addictive behaviours) and their understanding of the healing process as it applies to all of us. This space of acceptance, kindness and authenticity makes it possible for their new-found friend to start speaking from the heart about their own situation, thereby catalysing their own healing journey. As so many people experience shame, self-blame, and secrecy around their and others’ addictions, the book is written with the intention to make it safer for all of us in psychological pain to speak up and seek help. Rather than finding fault with and blaming the individual, the book aims to put addictions in the wider context of the human condition. Mental illness is at an all-time high, and addictive behaviours are but one manifestation of deeper unrest within societies. The authors invite readers far and wide, whether touched by addictions personally or not, to engage in the conversation and find their truth, and hopefully some refuge.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.
