This narrative study follows the first time reader who, while reading progressively through the Acts of the Apostles, constructs Paul's character from the time of his emergence up to the split with Barnabas (7:58-15:41). There are many surprises along the way, most notably the events at Damascus and the revelation of Paul's role as Jesus' chosen instrument. While there is some fulfilment of the reconfigured expectations, the reader notices significant delays, particularly in beginning the Gentile missions. This gap is employed productively to demonstrate the former persecutors acceptance within the church, to prepare the conditions for a future Gentile mission and to show Paul's formation within the church under the tutelage of Barnabas. While there in more fulfilment during the missionary journey (Acts 13-14), there is a further prolonged pause at the Jerusalem meeting, which is again employed productively, confirming the Gentile mission and especially its chief protagonist, Paul. The study elicits an engaging and dynamic portrait of Paul.

Confusion, false doctrine, and sheer foolishness continue to overwhelm the evangelical church— especially in the United States of America and in Europe. It is important that Christians and local churches get back to basics, which means discovering how to live as followers of Christ and spread the Word. Robert Kelvin Gee suggests that the best way to do this is to study how they did church at the very beginning. The Acts of the Apostles shows us this so clearly. This book will take you verse-by-verse through the first twelve chapters of Acts, using a question-and-answer format to reveal how the church was born, how it grew, and how believers can ensure it stays on track. Get answers to questions such as: • Why were the disciples commanded to stay in Jerusalem? • What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit’s baptism? • Did Jesus ascend from the Mount of Olives or from Bethany? And were there angels present or not? Learn about the early church, ignite your faith, and spread the Word with the lessons and insights in this book.

Christians in every age have acknowledged the importance of Pauls Epistle to the Romans. Martin Luther called it really the chief part of the New Testament, and truly the purest gospel. In addition, Samuel Taylor Coleridge regarded Romans as the most profound book in existence: others have described it as the cathedral of the Christian faith. The epistle is a Christian manifesto of freedom through Jesus Christ. It is the fullest, plainest, and grandest statement of the gospel in the New Testament. Throughout the centuries, this epistle has been recognized as perhaps the most complete theological statement regarding the Gospel of God. Paul is the great theologian who presented the gospel in theological terms which remain unmatched and which elevate the gospel message to a greater level of understanding. This epistle has five main themes: the first is the redefinition of the basis of salvation which is not based on the Law, but by grace alone and faith alone in Christ Jesus; the second is the redefinition of the people of God not according to physical birth but by spiritual birth and by faith; the third is the righteousness that is based on faith in God; the fourth is the doctrine of election; the fifth is the explanation of Christian behavior as based on Christian belief.

Controversy rages on about God's choosing people for salvation. Are only the few elect? Rather than typically beginning with the preconceptions of systematic theologies, Dr. William Klein takes up this question by searching for a biblical theology of election. He surveys the OT contexts of God's choosing individuals--prophets, priests, kings--to serve divine purposes, and considers God's election of the nation of Israel as his special people. This OT study proposes that God's election is both individual and corporate, but not always determinative. Individuals entered the people of God by birth, but not all the people found salvation. Faith in Yahweh was required. This book traces these elective understandings through the intertestamental literature, identifying continuities and shifts. The bulk of the study, and the heart of the argument, focus on the New Testament. Klein identifies concepts of election, and relationships between writers in the gospels, the Lucan material, Paul's writings, and the rest. The new covenant, God choosing the church in Christ, emphasizes election as corporate, while the individual election of Jesus' disciples and of Paul raises the question whether such chosenness is necessarily salvific. In closing, Klein discusses the most engaging and divisive questions around God's election, and offers a real challenge to today's church.

This interdisciplinary study focuses upon two conflicts within early Christianity and demonstrates how these conflicts were radically transformed by the Greco-Roman rhetorical and compositional practice of mimesis—the primary means by which Greco-Roman students were taught to read, write, speak, and analyze literary works. The first conflict is the controversy surrounding Jesus’s relationship with his family (his mother and brothers) and the closely related issue concerning his (alleged) illegitimate birth that is (arguably) evident in the gospel of Mark, and then the author of Matthew’s and the author of Luke’s recasting of this controversy via mimetic rhetorical and compositional strategies. I demonstrate that the author of our canonical Luke knew, vehemently disagreed with, used, and mimetically transformed Matthew’s infancy narrative (Matt 1–2) in crafting his own. The second controversy is the author of Acts’ imitative transformation of the Petrine/Pauline controversy—that, in Acts 7:58—15:30, the author knew, disagreed with, used, and mimetically transformed Gal 1–2 via compositional strategies similar to how he transformed Matthew’s birth narrative, and recast the intense controversy between the two pillars of earliest Christianity, Peter and Paul, into a unity and harmony that, historically, never existed.

“Suffering touches us all. It moves and shapes us in ways we never imagine. It breaks us down and builds us up, but it never leaves us where it finds us. In Scripture we learn that God’s power is magnified in our weaknesses and that suffering reveals our true state as weak creatures who need the Lord in our lives for strength and guidance (2 Cor. 12:7-10)…There is much Scripture on the subject of suffering and the purpose of this book is to consider the major passages that address it, and to show that there is hope and strength in God for those who turn to Him in the midst of life’s sorrows.” (pg. 6)
