And he has always been a reference as exemplary leader in the various positions he has served, respected among his family and peers for character and self-discipline. He has served as the Youth Leader of his local church for about five years and is currently serving as the Board Chairman for the Youth Ministry of his church nation-wide. He is a professional accountant and currently a Finance Manager for the institution he is working for. He has been in management position for four out of the six years he has been working since he graduated from the University. He is happily married and has a beautiful baby girl who is the joy at home. George is passionate about serving God, fulfilling purpose and inspiring others to live their purpose. INTRODUCTION All of my life, I have wondered why some people are leaders and others are not. This book is sort of an analysis of the relationship between employee, supervisor, manager and leader. In the 1970s, I had the pleasure of working out of a Pan Am training department office at JFK airport, NY, with a fellow who I "observed" as having qualities of leadership. I often thought had he been an officer in the trenches, and called "let's go," his men, without hesitation, would follow him "over the top." He was in management at Pan Am as a Maintenance Technical Instructor. I was conducting classes in management development. Of course, he wasn't a CEO or Vice President, probably because he did not have the necessary formal education, but to me he represented the qualities I would hope to find in those positions. He planned his work, set goals and clearly communicated them to individuals or groups. He comfortably reflected a style of knowledgeable, but modest, self confidence. With a pleasant personality, he seemed to earn the trust of others. It was always evident he had prepared himself through experience and study of the subject he was teaching. I don't know why, but to me, as I saw him perform his work, he was the natural "leader" 14 JOHN STEARNS type. Even though there were several other well qualified instructors in the group, this instructor, John Romaine, came to mind as I prepared to write this book on the subject of leadership in management. I am aware of the many books, courses, and other materials on the subject of management, and I have read many of them, but I believe in using my personal experiences and observations, with the experience of others, it will make clear the difference between "managers" and those who are "leaders in management." MY OBSERVATIONS OF, AND EXPERIENCES WITH, LEADERSHIP IN MANAGEMENT 15 It is not my intention to write this as a "personal career" story and therefore, references to my personal experiences are only to be considered as they relate to the subject and not necessarily in chronological order. In writing this book I am motivated by three thoughts. First most of my life I have mentally noted the differences in styles, manners, and methods of peoples' relationships with others. And then I found that in my working experience I had several opportunities to highlight and explore those items. Secondly in recent years, the emphasis on selecting leaders has grown. It seems that everyone is always seeking a good leader tribes, organizations, companies and countries, and too often, when one is selected there follows disappointment. And thirdly, it is helpful to recall the pleasure of working with men and women who were instrumental in accomplishing much that contributed to our society. 16 JOHN STEARNS It is also a recognized fact that there are many in management positions that have made and/ or are making great differences in the lives of people. So in this book instances will be noted in which men and women represent the various styles and manners of leadership in management and make note of the qualities that make some more leaders than others. This book is written as an "observation," with the hope it might encourage people holding management positions to reflect on their style and methods of communicating with others. Opening conclusions: (1) many organizations, with good purpose and intention, find themselves managed so poorly that others live at a disadvantage and unhappiness. (2) In too many instances large companies have had such poor management that millions of people have been hurt financially and otherwise and (3) In many countries on all continents, people find themselves searching for good leaders and when they don't, the results are friction and in many instances, bloodshed. So, my question is, what is it about management and leadership that is so difficult for some men and women to accept and practice? What is the difference between a manager and a leader?

This book is a collection of leadership thoughts and principles that I know you will connect with in some way. But it wasn't intended to be read cover to cover in one sitting. I recommend you consider it like a devotional that you pick up and read a couple of times a week. For things like this I generally set a repeating calendar notice to remind me to spend a few minutes getting a bit of a leadership nugget or shot in the arm, so to speak. You could pick it up daily and read the book in a little over three months. Or you could schedule a couple days a week and spread it out over a year. So that each nugget or morsel has some time to really sink in as you apply the principle within. Whatever your style is, I know you will get some value out of this book and I trust it will have a positive impact on your ability to lead your team. I have been a student of leadership for a very long time. I first read John Maxwell's book, "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership", in 1998. At the time I was a 30-year-old manager just a couple of years into my first leadership role. That book shifted gears for me and certainly had an impact on my ability to lead. Since then I've read so many good books on leadership and other related topics and benefitted from them. I've learned many approaches, habits, techniques, etc. on how to lead effectively. But then I had to learn how to apply those things to my circumstances and situations. So, for 2 decades I continued to read and apply, learn and apply, hear and apply and I continue to do so. And as I have learned I have always made it a priority to share what I learned with those around me. First as a peer, then as a boss, then as a certified life coach, and more recently as a certified leadership coach and teacher. With every opportunity I pour into anyone who showed a desire to learn and grow. I share my personal experiences of how I applied the principles that I had learned and would often recommend some of the books that helped me. But I never found the book that I was looking for. The book that would help people connect the widely written about principles to their everyday situations. It was the day-to-day application that only comes from experience and is best shared by stories and examples. For that reason, I wrote this book. It is a collection of many of the stories and illustrations I have shared over the years to help those hungry to learn and grow in their ability to lead. If you happen to be one of the many who read my blogs or social media posts over the years I want to thank you for listening and I pray that it encouraged you in some way to continue to grow and give your best to those who you were leading.
