The elaborate Sunday morning breakfasts, the seasonal delicacies, the preserves that made available non-seasonal flavours - this is the stuff of childhood memories. Tragically, given the sheer pace of life today, it has become harder and harder to follow in our mothers' footsteps, to recreate moments of bonding in the kitchen, to maintain family traditions, especially when it comes to food. Sandeepa Mukherjee Datta - blogger, foodie and mother of two - strives to make this possible in her own life, and yours. This delicious book travels from Sandeepa's grandmother's kitchen in north Calcutta to her home in a New York suburb through heart-warming anecdotes and quick-easy recipes. Find out how to cook the classic kosha mangsho, throw in a few mushrooms to improvise on the traditional posto, make your own paanch-phoron. The new woman's spin on old traditions, Bong Mom's Cookbook is a must-have kitchen supplement for Bongs and non-Bongs alike. 'Authentic and enjoyable, clear and personal, studded with anecdotes that warm the heart and stir up your own memories of your favourite family recipes, Bong Mo's Cookbook is a delight to read. The only problem ; you'll have to interrupt your reading many times to try out these mouth-watering recipes!' - Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, author of Sister of My Heart, One Amazing Thing and Oleander Girl

As the head baker and owner of a beloved Los Angeles bakery, Roxana Jullapat knows the difference local, sustainable flour can make: brown rice flour lightens up a cake, rustic rye adds unexpected chewiness to a bagel, and ground toasted oats enrich doughnuts. Her bakery, Friends & Family, works with dedicated farmers and millers around the country to source and incorporate the eight mother grains in every sweet, bread, or salad on the menu. In her debut cookbook, Roxana shares her greatest hits, over 90 recipes for reinventing your favorite cakes, cookies, pies, breads, and more. Her chocolate chip cookie recipe can be made with any of the eight mother grains, each flour yielding a distinct snap, crunch, or chew. Her mouthwatering buckwheat pancake can reinvent itself with grainier cornmeal. One-bowl recipes such as Barley Pumpkin Bread and Spelt Blueberry Muffins will yield fast rewards, while her Cardamom Buns and Halvah Croissants are expertly laid out to grow a home baker’s skills. Recipes are organized by grain to ensure you get the most out of every purchase. Roxana even includes savory recipes for whole grain salads made with sorghum, Kamut or freekeh, or easy warm dishes such as Farro alla Pilota, Toasted Barley Soup, or Gallo Pinto which pays homage to her Costa Rican upbringing. Sunny step-by-step photos, a sourcing guide, storage tips, and notes on each grain’s history round out this comprehensive cookbook. Perfect for beginner bakers and pastry pros alike, Mother Grains proves that whole grains are the secret to making any recipe so much more than the sum of its parts.

The category of “charity cookbook” is a favorite in American culinary history. Funds raised by sales of these cookbooks, with recipes donated by women’s groups and church societies, were used to aid a wide variety of local causes and charities. My Mother’s Cook Book belongs in this category—an excellent example of regional cooking styles of the post-Civil War Midwest. Several hundred recipes compiled by Ladies of St. Louis for the Women’s Christian Home include a complete range of dishes from soup to nuts, tending toward dishes “my mother” used, and handed down from mother to daughter. The ladies’ droll sense of humor is captured in the preface: “The recipes gathered in this priceless volume have been sent from all parts of the known world; several even from New Jersey.” Although the ladies are unnamed, a dedication by Mrs. E. F. Richards and the Misses Glover thanks all the contributors as well as local advertisers who aided the project (ads for merchants selling a wide variety of merchandise, including the “latest gems of fashion,” are included at the front of the book). This edition of My Mother’s Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.
