Was macht Mythen für Erinnerungskulturen attraktiv? Wie lässt sich ‚das Mythische‘ und dessen Anpassungsfähigkeit als Erfolgskonzept beschreiben? Mythosaktualisierungen betreffen nicht nur mythische Inhalte, sondern auch ganz wesentlich die Medien mythisierenden Erinnerns sowie den Status dieses Erinnerungsmodus – z.B. im Verhältnis zu Geschichte oder individueller Erfahrung. Mythen existieren nicht an sich und können auch nicht in einer wie auch immer zu denkenden ‚Reinform‘ erinnert werden. Sie sind nicht nur Objekte des kulturellen Gedächtnisses, sondern als spezifische Verfahren der Erinnerung mit ihrer medialen Erscheinungsweise derart verschmolzen, dass Tradierung und Generierung performativ im Erinnerungsvollzug ineinander greifen. Dieses Simultan von Weitergabe und Stiftung von Erinnerung zeigt der vorliegende Band aus literatur- und medienwissenschaftlicher, kommunikationswissenschaftlicher, politologischer und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive auf. Dabei geht es programmatisch nicht nur um Mythen, deren Ursprung in der Antike liegt, sondern auch um solche rezenterer Entstehungskontexte – um auf diese Weise zu vermeiden, Mythosaktualisierungen auf eine rein inhaltliche Ebene zu reduzieren und eine bis heute produktive Erinnerungsform auf einen exklusiven Entstehungszeitraum ‚echter Mythen‘ zu verweisen.

How does Cajun literature, emerging in the 1980s, represent the dynamic processes of remembering in Cajun culture? Known for its hybrid constitution and deeply ingrained oral traditions, Cajun culture provides an ideal testing ground for investigating the collective memory of a group. In particular, francophone and anglophone Cajun texts by such writers as Jean Arceneaux, Tim Gautreaux, Jeanne Castille, Zachary Richard, Ron Thibodeaux, Darrell Bourque, and Kirby Jambon reveal not only a shift from an oral to a written tradition. They also show hybrid perspectives on the Cajun collective memory. Based on recurring references to place, the texts also reflect on the (Acadian) past and reveal the innate ability of the Cajuns to adapt through repeated intertextual references. The Cajun collective memory is thus defined by a transnational outlook, a transversality cutting across various ethnic heritages to establish and legitimize a collective identity both amid the linguistic and cultural diversity in Louisiana, and in the face of American mainstream culture. Cajun Literature and Cajun Collective Memory represents the first analysis of the mnemonic strategies Cajun writers use to explore and sustain the Cajun identity and collective memory.

Die mehrfach komparatistisch angelegte Arbeit legt den Akzent auf die Untersuchung französischer und italienischer Mittelalterdiskurse von 1945 bis zur Gegenwart. "Mythos" und "Geschichte" werden zunächst als zwei verschiedene Modi des Vergangenheitsbezuges theoretisch profiliert. Diese Unterscheidung wird in ihrem Erkenntnispotenzial anhand einer historischen Figur mit Tendenz zur Mythisierung (Jeanne d'Arc) und eines literarischen Mythenkomplexes mit Tendenz zur Historisierung (Matière de Bretagne) erprobt. Die europäische Jeanne- und Artusliteratur des 12. bis 15. Jahrhunderts erweist sich als ästhetischer, nationaler und erinnerungskultureller Bezugspunkt der Romania. Leitfrage ist dabei, inwiefern die Konjunktur des Mittelalters von Binnenstrukturen geprägt ist (medienspezifisch, chronologisch, nationalspezifisch) und inwiefern dabei unterschiedliche Privilegierungen eines Erinnernsals "Mythos"oder als "Geschichte" eine Rolle spielen, auch im Vergleich mit der Mittelalterkonjunktur in Deutschland und England/USA.

Heimat als Aventiure - unter Verwendung des mittelhochdeutschen Aventiurekonzepts wird der Heimatbegriff zwischen 1989 und 2001 an seinen Rändern außerhalb der traditionellen Heimatliteratur untersucht. Heimat wird vom Territorium abgelöst, was eine Individualisierung des Begriffs zur Folge hat und gleichzeitig dessen Öffnung durch die Auffassung von Geschichte als Erzählung ermöglicht. Über eine Postmoderne-Konzeption nach Welsch und dem erwähnten erzähltheoretischen Zugang über Aventiure, einer strukturalistischen Vorgangsweise und der möglichen-Welten-Theorie wird Heimat beweglich und schließlich selbst zu einer Erzählung. Heimat erscheint als Möglichkeitsraum einer Aventiure, die durch das Erzählen performativ realisiert wird. Histoire und discours fallen dabei in eins, wodurch Heimat entsteht.

A Quest for Remembrance: The Underworld in Classical and Modern literature brings together a range of arguments exploring connections between the descent into the underworld, also known as katabasis, and various forms of memory. Its chapters investigate the uses of the descent topos both in antiquity and in the reception of classical literature in the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. In the process, the volume explores how the hero’s quest into the underworld engages with the theme of recovering memories from the past. At the same time, we aim to foreground how the narrative format itself is concerned with forms of commemoration ranging from trans-cultural memory, remembering the literary and intellectual canon, to commemorating important historical events that might otherwise be forgotten. Through highlighting this duality this collection aims to introduce the descent narrative as its own literary genre, a ‘memorious genre’ related to but distinct from the quest narrative.

Topographies of Popular Culture departs from the deceptively simple notion that popular culture always takes place somewhere. By studying the spatial and topographic imaginations at work in popular culture, the book identifies and illustrates several specific tendencies that deserve increased attention in studies of the popular. Since the early days of cinema, filmmakers have been intrigued by the lives and loves of British monarchs. The most recent productions by ITV and Netflix show that the fascination with British royalty continues unabated both in Britain and around the world. This book examines strategies of representing power and the staging of myths of power in seven popular films about British monarchs that were made after the mid-1990s revival of the “royal biopic” genre. By combining approaches from cultural studies with concepts and theories from the humanities, such as film studies and art history, it offers a comprehensive understanding of the cinematic portraits of royalty. In addition, the volume opens up new perspectives on how meaning is generated in films about the monarchy and on the connections between the biographical narratives. The introductory chapter to the case studies reviews the different academic positions on representations of royalty, provides a toolkit for studying the subject and demonstrates ways to approach the films. The book addresses questions of historical context and goes beyond a mere exploration of historical accuracy to reveal the films’ underlying ideological aims. As such, it makes a distinctive new contribution to the growing body of interdisciplinary work on the British monarchy in general and its cinematic representations in particular. It is the first monograph about representational mechanisms of royal identities and British past(s) in royal films such as Elizabeth, The Queen and The King’s Speech.
