Apresentamos uma análise da trajetória histórica da língua portuguesa, com foco em quatro fenômenos linguísticos que ocorreram no lento, gradativo e permanente processo de transformação do latim em direção ao português. Nossa interpretação aponta que esses processos linguísticos continuam incidindo no português brasileiro. Assim, demonstramos que muitos fenômenos que causam estranhamento na atualidade não devem ser considerados "erro" de linguagem, mas fazem parte de um processo natural e histórico da língua. Fizemos a análise dos fenômenos, quais sejam (i) fixação da ordem dos constituintes na oração, em par com a tendência à topicalização no atual português do Brasil; (ii) o surgimento do "artigo" enquanto classe de palavras, em par com a utilização do artigo como um determinante não obrigatório no português atual; (iii) a emergência do tempo verbal "futuro do presente", ao lado da construção hoje comumente conhecida como gerundismo e (iv) a apreciação de algumas mudanças fonéticas, através de uma correlação com um fenômeno próximo/similar do português hodierno. Nosso escopo consiste em apresentarmos uma interpretação de como fatos de mudança linguística se processaram e outros se vêm processando.
