This volume investigates how urban growth and prosperity transformed the cities of the Roman Mediterranean in the last centuries BCE and the fi rst centuries CE, integrating debates about Roman urban space with discourse on Roman urban history. The contributions explore how these cities developed landscapes full of civic memory and ritual, saw commercial priorities transforming the urban environment, and began to expand signifi cantly beyond their wall circuits. These interrelated developments not only changed how cities looked and could be experienced, but they also affected the functioning of the urban community and together contributed to keeping increasingly complex urban communities socially cohesive. By focusing on the transformation of urban landscapes in the Late Republican and Imperial periods, the volume adds a new, explicitly historical angle to current debates about urban space in Roman studies. This book explores the concept of cyberplace as a mode of inhabiting the contemporary world. As a result, it suggests that, for many communities, unlocking cyberspace and inhabiting cyberplaces is now an integral part of their coming-to-the-globalised-world. Boos reviews in the detail the existing academic literature from cultural anthropology, human geography, and sociology on “cyberspace”, concluding that a phenomenological perspective on cyberspace provides the possibility of gaining a deep understanding of our contemporary lifeworlds, in which on- and offline practices constantly intermingle. Whenever different social strata, religious communities, ethnic groups or nations were to be united in one political movement or in one state in Eastern Europe, the initiators usually appealed to their purported "brotherliness". Various overarching common traits were invoked, different traditions were called into action: from early Christianity to communism, from secret associations to proletarian alliances and partisan associations, from blood relationships (probratimstvo) to multinational states (Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia), from pan-Slavism in all its forms to Tito's "Third Way". The rhetoric and media enactments spanned from the commitment to metaphorical brotherly love to enforced affiliations to extortionate "family clans" that asserted their political goals through bio-politics and racism.

Aktuelle Siedlungsstrukturen führen zu neuen, vielfältigen Formen von Sozialen Nachbarschaften. Diese entsprechen immer weniger dem Image des anonymen Nebeneinanders, noch dem Bild der engen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen auf dem Land. Veränderte Mobilitäts- und Vernetzungsmöglichkeiten tragen außerdem dazu bei, dass bedeutsame persönliche Beziehungen immer weniger ausschließlich in der unmittelbaren (räumlichen) Nachbarschaft verortet sind und das Netz persönlicher (Nachbarschafts-) Beziehungen räumlich weit aufgespannt ist. Gleichzeitig wird dem lokalen Nahraum - im Sinne der baulichen Nachbarschaft - nach wie vor eine hohe Bedeutung zugeschrieben. Das Buch macht sich auf die Spurensuche nach Nachbarschaftskonzepten und -geschichte, ordnet diese in aktuelle theoretische Vergemeinschaftungsdiskurse ein und eröffnet mit dem Konzept der Sozialen Nachbarschaften Perspektiven für Nachbarschaftspolitiken und die professionelle Arbeit mit bzw. in Nachbarschaften.
