Excerpt from A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the difficult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. The bibliographical and critical references are intend ed to include only what is best, or at least what is good; to save space, full titles are given only where they are necessary to indicate the character of the work in question. As the Bibliography is designed, in part, to serve as a guide in the purchase of books, prices are generally quoted, and the latest editions noted. This accessible and fresh account of German writing since 1750 is a case study of literature as a cultural and spiritual resource in modern societies. Beginning with the emergence of German language literature on the international stage in the mid-eighteenth century, the book plays down conventional labels and periodisation of German literary history in favour of the explanatory force of international cultural impact. It explains, for instance, how specifically German and Austrian conditions shaped major contributions to European literary culture such as Romanticism and the ‘language scepticism’ of the early twentieth century. From the First World War until reunification in 1990, Germany’s defining experiences have been ones of catastrophe. The book provides a compelling overview of the different ways in which German literature responded to historical disaster. They are, first, Modernism (the ‘Literature of Negation’), second, the literature of totalitarian regimes (Third Reich and German Democratic Republic), and third the various creative strategies and evasions of the capitalist democratic multi-medial cultures of the Weimar and Federal Republics. It is commonly held that medieval Christians viewed medieval Jews in exclusively negative terms. This is certainly the dominant opinion in much twentieth-century scholarship, and it is not wholly without justification. It is, however, an opinion that does not accurately reflect the breadth of medieval German Christian thinking about medieval German Jews. Drawing on Passion plays, hagiographical narratives and didactic literature, this monograph reveals a hitherto largely unacknowledged diversity in medieval German representations of Jews. In many of the best-attested texts from the late medieval and early modern periods, Jews appear in German literature as sympathetic, even morally exemplary figures.
