Numerous movies, YouTube videos, books, and public service announcements have begun to address people with narcolepsy, and this discourse has led to greater visibility and understanding about an often-misunderstood condition. In Narratives of Narcolepsy in Everyday Life: Exploring Intricacies of Identity, Sleepiness, and Place, Nicole Eugene draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and field notes to examine life with narcolepsy, witha particular focus on how certain socially-defined places play significant roles in determining the meaning of sleepiness, medication side effects, and other narcolepsy symptoms. Eugene also includes one autoethnographic essay that explores her own experiences with narcolepsy as a Black woman, refracted through the lens of the various places where sleepiness may arise. Throughout the book, an emphasis on making sense of narcolepsy by communicating with others with the condition demonstrates a peer-based approach to researching health communication and disabilities. Drawing on feminist disability studies, health communication, narrative inquiry, and autoethnography, this book is an example of interpretive qualitative communication research that renders the lives of vulnerable people with compassion and understanding.

Narcolepsy is a clinical syndrome defined by four symptoms: a compliant excessive sleepiness, a sudden bilateral loss of postural muscle tone, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations. When cataplexy is predominant, narcolepsy can be misdiagnosed as syncope or drop attacks. The authors of this book discuss how to correctly diagnosis narcolepsy and how to avoid certain pitfalls which would lead to erroneous treatments due to the misdiagnosis. Moreover, this book examines the role exerted by obesity in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy. This book underlines the importance of body weight as a factor influencing the narcolepsy, indicating also the possible therapeutic strategies by modifications of eating behavior. In addition, modafinil is a mild, wake-promoting stimulant that is pharmacologically distinct from other central nervous system stimulants. This book provides an overview of modafinil's effects on human and animal behavior and in the brain. Other chapters assess narcolepsy in children, the influences of orexin A in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy and the prevalence of periodic leg movements (PLM) in people who suffer from narcolepsy.

The Second International Symposium on Narcolepsy was held at Fairchild Auditorium, Stanford University, on 6-7 July 1985 under the presidency of Drs. William C. Dement and Christian Guillemi nault. It succeeded the First International Symposium on Narco lepsy held in La Grande Motte, France, organized by Pierre Pas souant in July 1975 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the publication of Jean B. E. Gelineau's paper which proposed the naming of narcolepsy. At the second narcolepsy symposium, many important research reports on both basic and clinical aspects of narcolepsy were given by investigators from many countries of the world. Audience inter est was particularly attracted by the section on the relationship be tween HLA and narcolepsy, in which recent evidence that almost all narcoleptic patients are HLA-DR2 positive was reported by in vestigators from Japan, England, France, Canada, and the United States. The close relationship between the HLA antigens, hitherto considered as immune-related genetic markers encoded by genes on human chromosome 6, and narcolepsy appeared to open a new approach not only for the research of narcolepsy but also for the mechanism of sleep in general. Publication of all these new findings on the association of HLA and narcolepsy was considered; an outline was worked out and all the groups agreed to prepare a contribution covering the various aspects of this topic.
