Vincenzo Consolo is counted by many critics among the most significant voices in contemporary world literature. This volume addresses the influence of Italian neorealist films on world cinema well beyond the post-World War II period associated with the movement. Despite its lack of organization and relatively short life span, the Italian neorealist movement deeply influenced directors and film traditions around the world. This collection examines the impact of Italian neorealism beyond the period of 1945-52, the years conventionally connected to the movement, and beyond the postwar Italian film industry where the movement originated. Vincenzo Consolo: gli anni de «l’Unità» (1992-2012), ovvero la poetica della colpa-espiazione analizza l’assidua collaborazione di Vincenzo Consolo (1933-2012) con il quotidiano «l’Unità», una collaborazione che, iniziata nei primi anni Novanta e durata fino alla morte, rivela una forma di protagonismo politico a cui lo scrittore si era in precedenza sottratto. In questo stesso arco di tempo, Consolo si trasforma nei suoi scritti letterari da «contastorie consolatorio» a narratore benjaminiano, e offre alle giovani generazioni un modello di vita progressista basato sulle proprie esperienze giovanili. Tale sviluppo artistico necessita a sua volta di una trasformazione del punto di vista narrativo e spiega l’adozione del pronome di prima persona, quell’«impudico io», come lui stesso lo definisce. Questa forma di sperimentalismo letterario, che si differenzia dal lavoro svolto nei decenni precedenti, permette allo scrittore di espiare la colpa di non avere, negli anni Settanta ed Ottanta, fatto di più per ovviare al degrado sociale, ambientale e politico che aveva visto dilagare.

Il confronto tra Meridione e letteratura nel periodo dell'Unità d'Italia ai nostri giorni, soprattutto per quanto attiene alla nozione di Storia: un tema a cui gli scrittori meridionali si sono dimostrati particolarmente sensibili, ma che hanno elaborato in maniera contraddittoria e problematica. Quel che trapela da questa indagine è che gli scrittori meridionali non hanno creduto nella Storia (intesa vichianamente come conquista di modernità e di progresso), arrivando a teorizzare la negazione o a scavalcarla rifugiandosi nell'utopia. Ripercorrendo i temi cruciali del meridionalismo - l'Unificazione del 1861, la Questione meridionale, le trasformazioni della società industriale, l'emigrazione, l'epoca del postmoderno - viene qui offerta una chiave interpretativa da cui emerge un dato trascurato dagli studi precedenti: a eccezione di pochi nomi, gli intellettuali del Sud si sono fermati alla denuncia dei fatti, anziché costruire una cultura progettuale in grado di riscattare o redimere gli umili.
