The M864 projectile is an extended range design which includes both a dome base cavity and a base burn capability. The extended range is accomplished through the injection of hot, fuel-rich gas which burns in the initially low-pressure base region. An engineering model has been developed to compute the flight performance of the M864 base burn projectile. This model includes the coupled performance of the gas generator, effects of injected mass flow on the aerodynamics, and a modified point mass trajectory simulation. The gas generator model is based on measured burn rates and basic fluid dynamics. The discharge rate of the generator is calibrated against laboratory experiments. Effects of spin on burn rate are deduced from comparison of analysis with spin fixture tests. Linear and first order nonlinear effects of mass injection on base pressure are the basis for evaluation of base drag. Navier-Stokes solutions near the base with air injection provides essential data. Correlation equations predict base pressure as a function of Mach number, injection rate, and propellant gas temperature. Temperature effects on base pressure are a unique feature of the analysis. A computational capability has been developed for predicting the flow field about the entire projectile, including the recirculatory base flow, at transonic speeds. Additionally, the computer code allows mass injection at the projectile base and hence is used to show the effects of base bleed on base drag. Computations have been made for a secant-ogive-cylinder projectile for a series of Mach numbers in the transonic flow regime. Computed results show the qualitative and quantitative nature of base flow with and without base bleed. The reduction in base drag with base bleed is clearly predicted for various mass injection rates and for Mach numbers .9

Detailed finite rate chemistry models for H2 and H2-CO combustion have been incorporated into a Navier-Stokes computer code and applied to flow field simulation in the base region of an M864 base burning projectile. Results without base injection were obtained using a low Reynolds number k-epsilon turbulence model and several mixing length turbulence models. The results with base injection utilized only the Baldwin-Lomax model for the Projectile forebody and the Chow wake mixing model downstream of the projectile base. A validation calculation was performed for a supersonic hydrogen-air burner using an H2 reaction set which is a subset of the H2-CO reaction set developed for the base combustion modeling. The comparison with the-available experimental data was good, and provides a level of validation for the technique and code developed Projectile base injection calculations were performed for a flat base M864 projectile at M infinity = 2. Hot air injection, H2 injection and H2-CO injection were modeled, and computed results show reasonable trends in the base pressure increase (base drag reduction), base corner expansion and downstream wake closure location.
