After watching the death of another mermaid, Nerida knows contact with humans is forbidden. She finds solace walking the shorelines and discovering trinkets from shipwrecks. One night she chooses to save a human instead of letting him drown. What she didn’t expect was an unexplainable connection to the pirate and his lost treasure. From an early age, Destan dreamed of sailing the open waters. While in service to the crown, an act of mutiny forces him to become a pirate. With a bounty on his head, he captains his vessel ahead of the hangman’s noose. In the dark waters of the Caribbean, a storm brings him face to face with a mysterious woman. Who is this ghost of a woman walking the beach and singing with sorrow? Did she have anything to do with saving him? Destan is determined to discover the answers to his questions while Nerida seeks knowledge about humans. As their worlds collide, outside forces threaten not only their connection but their very lives. Will being a pirate and mermaid destroy their futures? Or is their connection something more powerful?

The Integration Of Language And Society written by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The volume explores the integration of language and society as reflected in the grammar of a language. Each language bears an imprint of the society that speaks it; language reflects speakers' relationships with each other, their beliefs, and their ways of viewing the world, as well as other aspects of their social environment, their means of subsistence, and even geographical features of the areas in which the language is spoken. The chapters in this book draw on data from the languages of Australia and New Guinea (Dyirbal and Idi), South America (Chamacoco, Ayoreo, Murui, and Tariana), Asia (Japanese, Brokpa, and Dzongkha), and Africa (Iraqw) to examine the ways in which the grammar of a language relates to societal practices. The volume begins with a general introduction that summarizes the main issues relevant to how language and societies are integrated, before later chapters explore specific points of integration in a range of diverse languages, including honorifics, genders and classifiers, possessives, evidentiality, comparatives, and demonstratives. The findings advance our understanding of how non-linguistic traits have their correlates in language, and how these change when society changes. The volume will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of typology, cultural and linguistic anthropology, and sociolinguistics and social sciences more widely.

Commands written by Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-04 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book focuses on the form and the function of commands—directive speech acts such as pleas, entreaties, and orders—from a typological perspective. A team of internationally-renowned experts in the field examine the interrelationship of these speech acts with cultural stereotypes and practices, as well as their origins and development, especially in the light of language contact. The volume begins with an introduction outlining the marking and the meaning of imperatives and other ways of expressing commands and directives. Each of the chapters that follow offers an in-depth analysis of commands in a particular language. These analyses are cast in terms of 'basic linguistic theory'—a cumulative typological functional framework—and the chapters are arranged and structured in a way that allows useful comparison between them. The languages investigated include Quechua, Japanese, Lao, Aguaruna and Ashaninka Satipo (both from Peru), Dyirbal (from Australia), Zenzontepec Chatino (from Mexico), Nungon, Tayatuk, and Karawari (from Papua New Guinea), Korowai (from West Papua), Wolaitta (from Ethiopia), and Northern Paiute (a native language of the United States).

Kingdom Of Beauty written by Kim Brandt and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-20 with Art categories.

A Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University Kingdom of Beauty shows that the discovery of mingei (folk art) by Japanese intellectuals in the 1920s and 1930s was central to the complex process by which Japan became both a modern nation and an imperial world power. Kim Brandt’s account of the mingei movement locates its origins in colonial Korea, where middle-class Japanese artists and collectors discovered that imperialism offered them special opportunities to amass art objects and gain social, cultural, and even political influence. Later, mingei enthusiasts worked with (and against) other groups—such as state officials, fascist ideologues, rival folk art organizations, local artisans, newspaper and magazine editors, and department store managers—to promote their own vision of beautiful prosperity for Japan, Asia, and indeed the world. In tracing the history of mingei activism, Brandt considers not only Yanagi Muneyoshi, Hamada Shōji, Kawai Kanjirō, and other well-known leaders of the folk art movement but also the often overlooked networks of provincial intellectuals, craftspeople, marketers, and shoppers who were just as important to its success. The result of their collective efforts, she makes clear, was the transformation of a once-obscure category of pre-industrial rural artifacts into an icon of modern national style.

Criminal Justice In International Society written by Willem de Lint and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-03 with Social Science categories.

This book adopts a critical criminological approach to analyze the production, representation and role of crime in the emerging international order. It analyzes the role of power and its influence on the dynamics of criminalization at an international level, facilitating an examination of the geopolitics of international criminal justice. Such an approach to crime is well-developed in domestic criminology; however, this critical approach is yet to be used to explore the relationship between power, crime and justice in an international setting. This book brings together contrasting opinions on how courts, prosecutors, judges, NGOs, and other bodies act to reflexively produce the social reality of international justice. In doing this, it bridges the gaps between the fields of sociology, criminology, international relations, political science, and international law to explore the problems and prospects of international criminal justice and illustrate the role of crime and criminalization in a complex, evolving, and contested international society.

This volume offers a comprehensive account of the typology of noun classification across the world's languages. Every language has some means of categorizing objects into humans, or animates, or by their shape, form, size, and function. The most widespread are linguistic genders - grammatical classes of nouns based on core semantic properties such as sex (female and male), animacy, humanness, and also shape and size. Classifiers of several types also serve to categorize entities. Numeral classifiers occur with number words, possessive classifiers appear in the expressions of possession, and verbal classifiers are used on a verb, categorizing its argument. These varied sorts of genders and classifiers can also occur together. This volume elaborates on the expression, usage, history, and meanings of noun categorization devices, exploring their various facets across the languages of South America and Asia, which are known for the diversity of their noun categorization. The volume begins with a typological introduction that outlines the types of noun categorization devices and their expression, scope, functions, and development, as well as sociocultural aspects of their use. The following nine chapters provide in-depth studies of genders and classifiers of different types in a range of South American and Asian languages and language families, including Arawak languages, Zamucoan, Hmong, and Japanese.
