Applying the insights of neuroscience to architecture has the potential to deliver buildings and spaces that measurably promote well-being and create healthier or more effective environments for specific activities. There is, however, a risk that neuroarchitecture will become just another buzzword, a passing architectural fashion or a marketing exercise just as 'eco', 'green' and 'sustainable' have become. This issue of AD offers the reader an alternative to 'neuro' sound-bites and exposes them to the thinking which led to the design of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour (SWC), a pioneering medical research facility designed to foster collaboration between researchers. Multi award winning, the SWC was one of the first buildings in the world designed to take into account what has been learned about how the work space affects behaviour and is a highly effective building in which to work. Readers will gain a richer, deeper insight into the complex mental and existential aspects of architecture, design, and our many senses, how they interact and might interact in the future, and how that knowledge can be used to design more effective buildings and built environments.

How can we design streetscapes on a human scale in high-density environments? In Western cities, an increasing number of inhabitants need to be accommodated. This often means the introduction of taller high-rise buildings. Although these new urban projects are designed with the intention to create a sense of human scale for the inhabitants, it remains unclear how the users of these streetscapes actually experience them.00This book explores the insights offered by the new hybrid field of neuroarchitecture. Using state-of-the-art technology, researchers in this field are able to track minutely how the body responds to impulses from the built environment. Neuroarchitecture introduces the field and shows best practices of streetscapes in Western cities, such as Amsterdam, Toronto, Manchester and Oslo. Each location is analyzed in depth, using a research-through-design method. What do the existing urban fabric studies teach us? What patterns can be observed and experienced visually? 'Neuroarchitecture' questions design guidelines and gives practical tools to improve the human-scale attributes of high-density built environments.00In conjunction with AUAS University of Applied Sciences, Chair of Spatial Urban Transformation.

Neuroarchitecture is the study of the impact of the built environment on the brain and how it affects our cognitive, emotional and physical well-being. There is a rising need to consider neuroarchitecture while designing schools. Learning spaces that properly apply the principles of neuroarchitecture will positively impact students' academic performance, emotional well-being, and physical health. Neuroarchitecture is about designing schools that are inclusive, stimulating, and supportive of learning in ways that promote a sense of purpose, belonging, and well-being, leading to a more positive and productive educational experience for students. This white paper provides compelling research-backed evidence regarding the many health and learning benefits of Neuroarchitecture and includes specific strategies for incorporating it into the design of schools.

Since the dawn of humanity, architecture has been a fundamental expression of human culture and creativity. It provides us with shelter, forms spaces in which to live and work, and shapes the environment around us. However, it is only in the last few decades that a revolutionary new approach has begun to take shape: neuroarchitecture. This innovative discipline explores the intersection between architecture and neuroscience, seeking to understand how the physical spaces we inhabit can influence and shape our mental experience. Neuroarchitecture is a multidisciplinary discipline that combines knowledge from architecture, cognitive psychology, neuroscience and interior design. She proposes that the design and organization of spaces can have a direct impact on our well-being, mental health, creativity and cognitive performance. This innovative approach takes into account not only the aesthetics and functionality of spaces, but also the way they affect our brain, our emotions and our cognition.

"Architectural spaces are anchors for our memory. We find our place in the room by means of our sensory perception; the brain makes use of surfaces and spatial systems in order to store and organize the world we live in. The understanding of this principle forms the basis for the transfer of the results of recent neuroscientific research to architectural practice, as discussed in this book. Neuroarchitecture links neuroscience, perception theory, and Gestalt psychology, as well as music, art, and architecture, into a holistic approach that focuses on the laws of structure formation and the movement of the individual within the architectural space. Christoph Metzger, the author of Building for Dementia and Architecture and Resonance, analyses buildings designed by Alvar Aalto, Sou Fujimoto, Hugo Häring, Philip Johnson, Hermann Muthesius, Juhani Pallasmaa, James Stirling, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Peter Zumthor in the context of the Amsterdam School of Architecture and their criticism of functionalism in order to develop bases and criteria for a modern, people-related architecture that is indebted to neuroscientific knowledge"--Publisher's website.

Noo-politics is most broadly understood as a power exerted over the life of the mind, reconfiguring perception, memory and attention. This volume unites specialists in political and aesthetic philosophy, neuroscience, sociology and architecture, and presents their ideas for re-thinking the city in terms of neurobiology and Noo-politics. The book examines the relationship between information and communication, calling for a new logic of representation, and shows how architecture can merge with urban systems and processes to create new forms of network that empower the imagination and change our cultural landscape.

According to the American Institute of Stress (AIS), job stress is far and away the primary source of stress for American adults. The relationship between job stress and heart attacks, hypertension, and other disorders is well understood. Further, the cost of job stress in the United States is estimated to be over $300 billion due to outcomes such as accidents, turnover, and lost productivity. Perhaps the most consistent findings connecting job stress to health outcomes confirm that employees who perceive a high level of job demands without the appropriate control over job demands are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. In Brazil, the loss is estimated at 3.5% of the gross domestic product per year. Occupational diseases are related to the activities performed by workers and to working conditions and can trigger new or worsen already existing symptoms. Proper diagnosis and relevant information are essential for managers and workers to become aware of stressors and to take efficient measures to manage stress. Although quality of life is the responsibility of every individual, companies will definitely be able to benefit from the implementation of preventive actions, thus avoiding to pay a high price as a result of absenteeism, sick leaves, and drops in productivity and low work quality. This book is designed to be an additional tool to provide information and to suggest ways to deal with pressures and work demands, because stress levels are still on the rise. We believe that through information – and here you will be able to find the experience and opinions of recognized professionals in this area – workers will be able to live better and more balanced lives.
