The book presents a new, powerful model of neuronal networks, consisting of a three-dimensional neuronal culture in which 3D neuronal networks are coupled to micro-electrode-arrays (MEAs). It discusses the main advantages of the three-dimensional system compared to its two-dimensional counterpart, and shows that the network dynamics, recorded during both spontaneous and stimulated activity, differs between the two models, with the 3D system being better able to emulate the in vivo behaviour of neural networks. The book offers an extensive analysis of the system, from the theoretical background, to its design and applications in neuro-pharmacological studies. Moreover, it includes a concise yet comprehensive introduction to both 2D and 3D neuronal networks coupled to MEAs, and discusses the advantages, limitations and challenges of their applications as cellular and tissue-like in vitro experimental model systems.

In order to grow replacement tissues, 3D scaffolds are widely used as a template for tissue engineering and regeneration. These scaffolds, which are typically ‘seeded’ with cells, support the growth of new tissues. However, in order to achieve successful tissue growth, the scaffold must meet specific requirements and are often ‘functionalized’ to accentuate particular properties. Functional 3D tissue engineering scaffolds: materials, technologies, and applications, is a comprehensive review of functional 3D scaffolds, providing information on the fundamentals, technologies, and applications. Part 1 focuses on the fundamentals of 3D tissue scaffolds, examining information on materials, properties, and trends. Part 2 discusses a wide range of conventional technologies for engineering functional 3D scaffolds, leading the way to a discussion on CAD and advanced technologies for functional 3D scaffold engineering. Chapters in part 3 study methods for functionalizing scaffolds to support a variety of in vivo functions whilst the final set of chapters provides an important review of the most significant applications of functional 3D scaffolds within tissue engineering. This book is a valuable resource for biomaterial scientists and biomedical engineers in academia and industry, with interests in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Provides a self-contained work for the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering Discusses all the requirements a scaffold must meet and a wide range of strategies to create them Highlights significant and successful applications of functional 3D scaffolds

Smart mobile systems like micro-systems, smart textiles and implants and sensor-controlled medical devices, together with related networks and cloud services, are important enablers for telemedicine and pervasive health to become the next generation of health services. Social media and gamification have added further to pHealth as an ecosystem. This book presents the proceedings of pHealth 2019, the 16th in a series of international conferences on personalized health, held in Genoa, Italy, from 10 – 12 June 2019. The book includes 1 keynote, 2 of 4 invited talks, 36 oral presentations and 7 poster presentations from a total of 141 international authors. All submissions were critically reviewed by at least two independent experts and a member of the Scientific Program Committee. This process resulted in a full paper rejection rate of more than 30%. Besides wearable or implantable micro and nano technologies for personalized medicine, this volume addresses topics such as legal, ethical, social, and organizational requirements and impacts as well as necessary basic research for enabling future proof care paradigms. Such participatory, predictive, personalized, preventive, and effective care settings combine medical services and public health, prevention, social and elderly care, but also wellness and personal fitness. The multilateral benefits of pHealth technologies for all stakeholder communities offer enormous potential for the improvement of both care quality and industrial competitiveness, and also for the management of health care costs. Hence, the book will be of interest to all those involved in the provision of healthcare.

With the persisting need of animal experimentation for fundamental and applied research, the relevance and importance of the 3Rs Principle cannot be ignored. The 3Rs Principle was put forward over 50 years ago, providing an essential framework for more humane animal experimentation in research. In this half-century the research landscape within which this principle is applied has dramatically changed and evolved, with ever more emerging venues to explore for 3Rs advancement and implementation.
