Neuropsychological Validation Of Learning Disability Subtypes written by Byron P. Rourke and has been published by Guilford Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-11-01 with Psychology categories.

Building upon earlier attempts to create a scientific basis for subtypes of learning disabilities, this volume continues to examine the extent to which various subtyping schemes are valid. Like its predecessor, Neuropsychology of Learning Disabilities: Essentials of Subtype Analysis, it seeks to define such subtypes within an explicitly neuropsychological framework. Following an insightful overview of the dimensions and clinical applications of validity to learning disability subtypes, it reports on a wide-ranging series of investigations designed to designate the content, concurrent, predictive, construct, and clinical validity of various subtyping efforts.

The publication of this very important volume comes at a timely juncture in the history of learning disabilities. The focus of this volume is on developing a multidisciplinary understanding of the complexities of the research on learning disabilities and its various sUbtypes. It also will serve as an important compendium of the subtyping literature, particularly with respect to pertinent issues of nosology, specific sUbtyping models, neuro psychological diagnosis, and treatment. As the authors so correctly suggest, the differential diagnosis of learning disabilities subtypes is a critical first step in developing theoretically sound programs of psychoeducational intervention. Clearly, one must have some idea about the general abilities of a child before realistic expectations can be charted. Also, how can one plan a program of intervention without some knowledge of the deficient components of achievement within a do main? Does it not make both conceptual and practical sense to identify an individual's relative strengths and weaknesses so that abilities or strengths can be utilized to optimize functioning in areas of deficit? Although these all sound like reasonable precursors to assisting individuals in need of academic assistance, there are those who would argue otherwise. Impor tantly, however, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, in a recent report to Congress, advocates exactly what this volume proposes. Indeed, there are important needs to be addressed, and the literature reviewed herein strongly supports the conclusions drawn by these authors.

The result of an exhaustive analysis and synthesis of published research, LEARNING DISABILITIES and PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTIONING provides a coherent account of what currently is known about the psychosocial functioning of children--and, to some extent, adults--with learning disabilities. The book addresses questions central to the assessment and treatment of children with learning disabilities: Are learning disabled children at greater risk for socioemotional disturbances than are normal learners? Are the learning disabled more prone to externalized psychopathology than are normal learners? Is there a distinct psychosocial profile of disabled learners? The literature review reflects the three major hypotheses regarding the relationship between learning disabilities and psychosocial dysfunction that have alternately prevailed over the past 20 years. These are: socioemotional disturbance causes learning disabilities; learning disabilities cause socioemotional disturbance; specific patterns of central processing defects cause specific subtypes of learning disabilities and specific forms of socioemotional disturbance. Accompanying the data supporting these hypotheses are critical commentaries on the general and specific conclusions reached on the basis of the evidence provided, in addition to clinical observations and generalizations extrapolated from the empirical evidence gathered to date. Nine case studies illustrate the clinical applications of the models and hypotheses considered. Included among these are two adult cases that demonstrate some of the long-term developmental dimensions of learning disabilities. These case studies further illuminate the relationship between the patterns of neuropsychological assets and deficits that define the different learning disabilities and the various manifestations of psychosocial dysfunction and psychopathology that may be present. For all learning disabilities specialists in school and clinic settings, LEARNING DISABILITIES AND PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTIONING is both timely and essential reading. Practitioners and researchers in the areas of child clinical psychology and neuropsychology, child psychiatry, and speech/language pathology will also find this work highly informative.

Subtypes Of Learning Disabilities written by Lynne V. Feagans and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-12 with Education categories.

Although experts agree that various types of learning disabilities do exist, few attempts have been made to classify learning disabled children into subtypes. The editors of this collection feel that the lack of subcategorization has frustrated previous research efforts to obtain a generalizable body of knowledge in the field. To meet this critical need for definitive information, this book presents basic reviews and theoretical approaches used to subtype learning disabled children -- ranging from a behavior genetics approach to a dimensional approach. It also demonstrates actual research methods utilizing theoretical approaches.

Syndrome Of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities written by Byron P. Rourke and has been published by Guilford Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-06-23 with Psychology categories.

The syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) is a subtype of learning disabilities whose neuropsychological assets and deficits have predictable academic and psychosocial outcomes. Developed by Byron P. Rourke and elucidated in his previous work, the "white matter model" was designed to encompass the complex manifestations and neurophysiological underpinnings of the NLD syndrome. Now, for the first time, evidence that bears upon the white matter model has been gathered into a single volume. Building upon Rourke's previous work on NLD, Syndrome of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities: Neurodevelopmental Manifestations, further explores the ramifications of NLD in the neuropsychology of learning disabilities and in pediatric neurological disease, disorder, and dysfunction. Following an overview of the white matter model, chapters cover a wide range of pediatric neurological diseases and disorders through which the model is examined with particular attention to its neurophysiological aspects. The diseases and disorders discussed include callosal agenesis, Asperger syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome, Williams syndrome, de Lange syndrome, early hydrocephalus, Sotos syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism, acute lymphocytic leukemia, metachromatic leukodystrophy, Turner syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and toxicant-induced encephalopathy. Dimensions relevant to both assessment and treatment are raised throughout the work, as are suggestions for future research. Recommended for neuropsychologists, neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and pediatricians treating children with learning disabilities or with pediatric neurological disease, disorder, and dysfunction, Syndrome of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities serves both as an authoritative update on recent advances and as a text for advanced courses in child/developmental neuropsychology, pediatric neurology, and learning disabilities.

Recognized as the definitive reference in the field, this book addresses a broad range of biologically based disorders that affect children's learning and development. Leading authorities review the genetics of each disorder; its course and outcome; associated developmental, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges; and what clinicians and educators need to know about effective approaches to assessment and intervention. Coverage encompasses numerous lower-incidence neurodevelopmental disabilities as well as more frequently diagnosed learning and behavior problems with a genetic component.
