This book explains to physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, interested physicians and clinicians the theoretical and practical applications of single- to multi-channel functional electrical stimulation for a wide range of neurological symptoms. The targeted electrical stimulation of several muscle groups, timed to each other, can initiate and support a complete movement sequence and thus improve motor learning. Renowned experts from research and practice have compiled numerous application examples based on the available evidence in this comprehensive form for the first time. In addition, the reader will find exciting and informative contributions to the current study situation and effectiveness analyses. The text is enriched by videos on EMG-triggered functional multichannel electrical stimulation, stimulation of muscle groups in lower motor neuron lesions, and FES therapy approaches for dysarthria and swallowing disorders. From the contents: - FES in lesions of the upper motoneuron, lesion of the lower motoneuron and mixed forms - Combination of FES with mirror therapy and botulinum toxin - Motor learning, neuroplasticity, ICF-based goal setting and the use in home-based therapy - Basic principles, current parameters and their implications - FES in rehabilitation of facial paralysis, unilateral vocal fold paralysis, dysarthria and dysphagia, and neuro-urological deficits

Rehabilitation Robotics gives an introduction and overview of all areas of rehabilitation robotics, perfect for anyone new to the field. It also summarizes available robot technologies and their application to different pathologies for skilled researchers and clinicians. The editors have been involved in the development and application of robotic devices for neurorehabilitation for more than 15 years. This experience using several commercial devices for robotic rehabilitation has enabled them to develop the know-how and expertise necessary to guide those seeking comprehensive understanding of this topic. Each chapter is written by an expert in the respective field, pulling in perspectives from both engineers and clinicians to present a multi-disciplinary view. The book targets the implementation of efficient robot strategies to facilitate the re-acquisition of motor skills. This technology incorporates the outcomes of behavioral studies on motor learning and its neural correlates into the design, implementation and validation of robot agents that behave as ‘optimal’ trainers, efficiently exploiting the structure and plasticity of the human sensorimotor systems. In this context, human-robot interaction plays a paramount role, at both the physical and cognitive level, toward achieving a symbiotic interaction where the human body and the robot can benefit from each other’s dynamics. Provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in the area of rehabilitation robotics Includes information on both therapeutic and assistive robots Focuses on the state-of-the-art and representative advancements in the design, control, analysis, implementation and validation of rehabilitation robotic systems

Translational Neurorehabilitation written by Rocco Salvatore Calabrò and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-31 with Medical categories.

This book focuses on rehabilitation demonstrating how translational research may help clinicians in boosting neural plasticity and functional recovery. Translational Neurorehabilitation is a new interesting field that seeks to produce more meaningful, applicable rehabilitation results that directly enhance human health, performance and quality of life. As neurological diseases increase with age and people who survive a brain injury are rising, thanks to the improvement of intensive acute care, the need to appeal to neurorehabilitation will double in the next few years. Motor, cognitive and behavior approaches have changed over years and novel tools to treat brain and spinal cord injury should be validated before translating them into clinical practice. The book is aimed to expand current understanding of brain function and disease by evaluating preclinical and clinical trials on neural plasticity and functional recovery after nervous system disorders. Also, it disseminates the knowledge coming from novel therapies, including advanced robotic and ICT-based applications. The book will be of interest to neuroscientists, physiatrists, neural engineers, and clinical neurologists.

Debilitating neuromuscular disorders and traumatic brain, spinal cord or peripheral injuries have a devastating effect on those who suffer from them. Written from an engineering perspective, and based on a course taught by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Neurorehabilitation Devices first helps the designer to better understand and formulate design, measurement and control systems for biomedical devices used in the treatment and recovery of people suffering from these disorders. Just some of the topics covered in this book are: methods to allow an amputee to control a powered artificial arm by means of electrical signals generated by contractions of muscles of the residual limb in combination with motor nerve activity from peripheral nerves, as well as the development of new technologies to use electrical stimulation to treat the hyperactive bladder, to electrically induce bowel movement and defecation, and to develop methods for selective stimulation of nerve fibres.
