Issues concerning the introduction of information technology in education were studied as part of a project sponsored by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The following areas were explored: policies for schools and higher education and the context for the policies; implementation strategies; the impact on learning; the impact on teachers, teaching, and the curriculum; the impact on budgets, structures, and students; and possible futures. Educational responses to the challenge of new information technologies that have originated outside the formal educational sector are described, including programs for the general public and young people, and telecommunication-based projects. Strategies of policy implementation in primary and secondary education concern equipment, software, curriculum, and teacher training. Higher education uses information technology to provide computer assisted instruction and to deliver professional continuing education. Additional topics include: the impact of information technology on learning processes (reading, writing, and mathematics learning); cognitive prerequisites of computer programming; partnerships to promote information technology (e.g., between schools and universities); the use of technology in management and employment, and distance learning. Virtualization Of Universities written by Thomas Pfeffer and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-08 with Business & Economics categories.

The purpose of this volume is to shape conceptual tools to understand the impact of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) on the organization of universities. Traditional research-based universities, the most typical representatives of the higher education system, find themselves challenged by the speed and the wide range of technical innovations, but also by a vast array of implicit assumptions and explicit promises associated with the distribution of digital media. The author observes that as universities increasingly use digital media (computers and the Internet) to accomplish their tasks, a transformation takes place in an evolutionary rather than in a revolutionary way. Using the University of Klagenfurt as an in-depth case study, he explores such dynamic issues as how digital media affect the practice of research, the preservation and dissemination of knowledge (for example, through publishing and archiving), and delivery of education at universities. More broadly, he considers issues of organizational culture and design, administration, and leadership as universities integrate digital technologies into all aspects of their operations.

The rapid evolution of information technology (IT) is transforming our society and its institutions. For the most knowledge-intensive entities of all, research universities, profound IT-related challenges and opportunities will emerge in the next decade or so. Yet, there is a sense that some of the most significant issues are not well understood by academic administrators, faculty, and those who support or depend on the institution's activities. This study identifies those information technologies likely to evolve in the near term (a decade or less) that could ultimately have a major impact on the research university. It also examines the possible implications of these technologies for the research universityâ€"its activities (learning, research, outreach) and its organization, management, and financingâ€"and for the broader higher education enterprise. The authoring committee urges research universities and their constituents to develop new strategies to ensure that they survive and thrive in the digital age.

This book responds to an ever-increasing call from educators, policy makers, journalists, parents and the public at large for analysis that cuts through the hype surrounding the information revolution to address key issues associated with new media in higher education and learning. This collection is of value to those who are seeking a critical, non-commercial exposition of both the enormous opportunities and challenges for higher education that are tied to the use of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the development of distance education and distributed learning. The chapters are written by leading exponents, practitioners and researchers from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and the collection as a whole spans national boundaries and reaches beyond the research community to relate to issues of policy and practice.

Hardbound. This book examines how the higher education environment is being shaped by new information technologies, with a particular focus on technologies based in the Internet. The work will illustrate a vision of how virtual universities and their elements are emerging, and of how they can be shaped to the needs of knowledge-based societies. It will also examine what requirements and policies are necessary to effect the worldwide transformation of educational systems, especially given the disparate needs and capabilities across countries.

Information and Communication Technologies in Real-Life Learning presents the results of an International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) working conference held December 2004 in Melbourne, Australia. The working conference was organized by IFIP Working Group 3.2 (Informatics and ICT in Higher Education) and IFIP Working Group 3.4 (Professional and Vocational Education in Information Technology). The papers in this book present a cross-section of issues in real-life learning in which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role. Some of the issues covered include: education models for real-life learning enabled by ICT; effective organization of a real-life learning environment; the changing role of the student; the changing role of educational institutions and their relationship with business and industry; the changing role of teachers and their use of ICT; and managment of ICT-rich education change.
