This volume presents the proceedings of the meeting New Trends in One-Dimensional Dynamics, which celebrated the 70th birthday of Welington de Melo and was held at the IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, in November 2016. Highlighting the latest results in one-dimensional dynamics and its applications, the contributions gathered here also celebrate the highly successful meeting, which brought together experts in the field, including many of Welington de Melo’s co-authors and former doctoral students. Sadly, Welington de Melo passed away shortly after the conference, so that the present volume became more a tribute to him. His role in the development of mathematics was undoubtedly an important one, especially in the area of low-level dynamics, and his legacy includes, in addition to many articles with fundamental contributions, books that are required reading for all newcomers to the field.

About one and a half decades ago, Feigenbaum observed that bifurcations, from simple dynamics to complicated ones, in a family of folding mappings like quadratic polynomials follow a universal rule (Coullet and Tresser did some similar observation independently). This observation opened a new way to understanding transition from nonchaotic systems to chaotic or turbulent system in fluid dynamics and many other areas. The renormalization was used to explain this observed universality. This research monograph is intended to bring the reader to the frontier of this active research area which is concerned with renormalization and rigidity in real and complex one-dimensional dynamics. The research work of the author in the past several years will be included in this book. Most recent results and techniques developed by Sullivan and others for an understanding of this universality as well as the most basic and important techniques in the study of real and complex one-dimensional dynamics will also be included here.

One-dimensional dynamics owns many deep results and avenues of active mathematical research. Numerous inroads to this research exist for the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. This book provides glimpses into one-dimensional dynamics with the hope that the results presented illuminate the beauty and excitement of the field. Much of this material is covered nowhere else in textbook format, some are mini new research topics in themselves, and novel connections are drawn with other research areas both inside and outside the text. The material presented here is not meant to be approached in a linear fashion. Readers are encouraged to pick and choose favourite topics. Anyone with an interest in dynamics, novice or expert alike, will find much of interest within.

This book introduces the reader to the two main directions of one-dimensional dynamics. The first has its roots in the Sharkovskii theorem, which describes the possible sets of periods of all cycles (periodic orbits) of a continuous map of an interval into itself. The whole theory, which was developed based on this theorem, deals mainly with combinatorial objects, permutations, graphs, etc.; it is called combinatorial dynamics. The second direction has its main objective in measuring the complexity of a system, or the degree of “chaos” present in it; for that the topological entropy is used. The book analyzes the combinatorial dynamics and topological entropy for the continuous maps of either an interval or the circle into itself.

The basic aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "New Trends in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena: The Geometry of Nonequilibrium" was to bring together researchers from various areas of physics to review and explore new ideas regarding the organisation of systems driven far from equilibrium. Such systems are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial and tempo ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection, traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and their role in the disorganisa tion of structures, spatio-temporal intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre sented were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica, France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to August 12th, 1988. We greatly thank Yves Pomeau and Daniel Walgraef who, as members of the organising committee, gave us valuable advice and encouragements.

This book collects selected papers written by invited and plenary speakers of the 15th International Congress on Mathematical Physics (ICMP) in the aftermath of the conference. In extensive review articles and expository texts as well as advanced research articles the world leading experts present the state of the art in modern mathematical physics. New mathematical concepts and ideas are introduced by prominent mathematicalphysicists and mathematicians, covering among others the fields of Dynamical Systems, Operator Algebras, Partial Differential Equations, Probability Theory, Random Matrices, Condensed Matter Physics, Statistical Mechanics, General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Information and String Theory. All together the contributions in this book give a panoramic view of the latest developments in mathematical physics. They will help readers with a general interest in mathematical physics to get an update on the most recent developments in their field, and give a broad overview on actual and future research directions in this fascinating and rapidly expanding area.

The behaviour under iteration of unimodal maps of an interval, such as the logistic map, has recently attracted considerable attention. It is not so widely known that a substantial theory has by now been built up for arbitrary continuous maps of an interval. The purpose of the book is to give a clear account of this subject, with complete proofs of many strong, general properties. In a number of cases these have previously been difficult of access. The analogous theory for maps of a circle is also surveyed. Although most of the results were unknown thirty years ago, the book will be intelligible to anyone who has mastered a first course in real analysis. Thus the book will be of use not only to students and researchers, but will also provide mathematicians generally with an understanding of how simple systems can exhibit chaotic behaviour.
