This book explores how teaching endures in the age of pervasive dread. It asks: How does teaching refuse and counter dread's grip? What new stories of teaching might be told beyond the culture of dread? Dread is the prevailing mood of this era. Dread is an affliction of minds, bodies, and social life. Climate chaos, spiraling inequality, loss of community, cynicism, and escalating attacks on public schools, universities, and educators are all contribute to pervasive dread. This book explores the persistence of teaching in this era of dread. The chapters examine the context of teaching in a time of dread and touch upon different valences of race and pedagogy, as well as pedagogy in relation to global crises of capitalism, technology, and ecology. Taken together, they explore how teaching endures over dread and examine how teaching might be rethought as a creative force for imagination over fatalism, reciprocity over exploitation, thought over fundamentalism, belonging over atomization, love over nihilism, mutuality over narcissism, care over hatred, joy over despair, democracy over fascism, and hope over dread. This thought-provoking volume will be a key resource for educators, scholars, artists, and activists alike. It was originally published as a special issue of Review of Education, Pedagogy, and Cultural Studies.

This book illustrates how higher education responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and grew from it. The pandemic impacted faculty development, drew a greater focus on the measurement of effective teaching in higher education, and provided a better understanding of what was needed to better aid educators in colleges and universities nationwide. The stage is set for a more resilient higher education with chapters illustrating new paradigms and promise. Three themes are highlighted throughout this volume. Authors underscore the need to explore different modalities of delivery for faculty development and instruction, to enhance the leverage of technology in course design, and to refine faculty development for holistic development. Pulling together empirical data on college faculty administration, and student responses to the pandemic, chapter authors address the unique issues faced by educators and highlight successes and challenges in working with existing Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) and information technology structures. Featuring contributions from diverse institutions, each chapter provides specific guidelines and recommendations for higher education to set the stage for innovation and change. Laying the groundwork for the design of more effective models of faculty development for higher education, this book is a valuable resource for higher education administrators and faculty to improve higher education going forward.

Offering a new perspective on adult English language education, this book provides theoretical and practical insights into how digital literacies can be included in the learning programmes for newly arrived adults from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Enhancing Digital Literacies with Adult English Language Learners takes readers inside Langfield, an adult community-based English language centre that supports the settlement and learning of this vulnerable group. Drawing on a six-month ethnographic study of Langfield’s work, the book explores the approach to teaching digital literacies and presents a range of perspectives, including those of the adult learners, the teachers, and the organisation’s CEO. The chapters present a holistic view of teaching digital literacies in the adult English language context by exploring: adult learners’ digital literacy practices in everyday life and their learning at Langfield; teachers' beliefs and practices about digital literacies; and the support offered to them through institutional resources, leadership, and professional learning. The book identifies exemplary practices, as well as areas for further development in Langfield’s work and offers a range of implications for practice, policy, and research. Written in a detailed but accessible manner, this book contributes important insights into the strengths and needs of this unique and complex education sector. Addressing an area of uncertainty for many researchers, practitioners, leaders, and policy makers working within community-based learning contexts in Australia and internationally, this book will be an essential resource.

Primary And Secondary Education During Covid 19 written by Fernando M. Reimers and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-14 with Education categories.
This open access edited volume is a comparative effort to discern the short-term educational impact of the covid-19 pandemic on students, teachers and systems in Brazil, Chile, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the first academic comparative studies of the educational impact of the pandemic, the book explains how the interruption of in person instruction and the variable efficacy of alternative forms of education caused learning loss and disengagement with learning, especially for disadvantaged students. Other direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic diminished the ability of families to support children and youth in their education. For students, as well as for teachers and school staff, these included the economic shocks experienced by families, in some cases leading to food insecurity and in many more causing stress and anxiety and impacting mental health. Opportunity to learn was also diminished by the shocks and trauma experienced by those with a close relative infected by the virus, and by the constrains on learning resulting from students having to learn at home, where the demands of schoolwork had to be negotiated with other family necessities, often sharing limited space. Furthermore, the prolonged stress caused by the uncertainty over the resolution of the pandemic and resulting from the knowledge that anyone could be infected and potentially lose their lives, created a traumatic context for many that undermined the necessary focus and dedication to schoolwork. These individual effects were reinforced by community effects, particularly for students and teachers living in communities where the multifaceted negative impacts resulting from the pandemic were pervasive. This is an open access book.
