Una discarica dove ogni anno vengono avvistati seimila roghi di rifiuti, che inceneriscono scorie industriali, sprigionano veleni, ammorbano l'aria e uccidono la vita nei campi.»A scrivere queste parole è Padre Maurizio Patriciello, non un politico ma un semplice sacerdote divenuto nel giro di pochi mesi il leader del movimento civile che chiede con urgenza la bonifica della Terra dei fuochi. E che, oltre ad aver conquistato l'attenzione mediatica e delle istituzioni, qualcosa di concreto sta anche finalmente ottenendo, come dimostra il decreto del governo Letta del dicembre 2013.Tutto ha inizio nella notte dell'8 giugno 2012, quando Padre Maurizio si sveglia assalito da una puzza insopportabile a cui è impossibile sfuggire. Per lui è come una chiamata del Signore: accende il computer e su Facebook comincia a raccogliere la protesta della gente che, impotente, si è vista man mano avvelenare la propria campagna. Non che prima di quella notte non se ne sapesse nulla - c'erano state inequivocabili denunce come Gomorra di Saviano nel 2006 e Biùtiful cauntri nel 2007, film pluripremiato e presto dimenticato -, ma l'immane devastazione dell'Agro aversano, lo scampolo di terra dove in due decenni sono stati scaricati dieci milioni di tonnellate di rifiuti, era stata oggetto di una "rimozione collettiva" o di interventi non sostenuti da una reale volontà politica: un'ottantina di inchieste giudiziarie che non hanno portato a nulla, la nomina di diversi commissari straordinari, misure di facciata attuate solo per tener buona l'Europa Davanti all'inesorabile avanzare del percolato che gocciola dall'immondizia in putrefazione minacciando le falde acquifere, davanti alla devastazione che ha invaso campi un tempo fertilissimi, davanti all'impennata delle morti per tumore anche fra i bambini,Padre Maurizio ha capito che non poteva fermarsi. E, per scongiurare l'Apocalisse, ha intrapreso la battaglia che racconta in questo libro, e che è solo all'inizio. Dalle sue parole, forti e chiare su una realtà agghiacciante quanto complessa, nasce un messaggio importantissimo per la coscienza civile di noi italiani.

An interdisciplinary environmental humanities volume that explores human-environment relationships on our permanently polluted planet. While toxicity and pollution are ever present in modern daily life, politicians, juridical systems, media outlets, scholars, and the public alike show great difficulty in detecting, defining, monitoring, or generally coming to terms with them. This volume’s contributors argue that the source of this difficulty lies in the struggle to make sense of the intersecting temporal and spatial scales working on the human and more-than-human body, while continuing to acknowledge race, class, and gender in terms of global environmental justice and social inequality. The term toxic timescapes refers to this intricate intersectionality of time, space, and bodies in relation to toxic exposure. As a tool of analysis, it unpacks linear understandings of time and explores how harmful substances permeate temporal and physical space as both event and process. It equips scholars with new ways of creating data and conceptualizing the past, present, and future presence and possible effects of harmful substances and provides a theoretical framework for new environmental narratives. To think in terms of toxic timescapes is to radically shift our understanding of toxicants in the complex web of life. Toxicity, pollution, and modes of exposure are never static; therefore, dose, timing, velocity, mixture, frequency, and chronology matter as much as the geographic location and societal position of those exposed. Together, these factors create a specific toxic timescape that lies at the heart of each contributor’s narrative. Contributors from the disciplines of history, human geography, science and technology studies, philosophy, and political ecology come together to demonstrate the complex reality of a toxic existence. Their case studies span the globe as they observe the intersection of multiple times and spaces at such diverse locations as former battlefields in Vietnam, aging nuclear-weapon storage facilities in Greenland, waste deposits in southern Italy, chemical facilities along the Gulf of Mexico, and coral-breeding laboratories across the world.

Il saggio prende avvio dalle proteste popolari contro il progetto di due mega impianti inquinanti di trattamento rifiuti che hanno visto come scenario la media valle del fiume Crati in Calabria tra la fine degli anni novanta del secolo scorso e i mesi a cavallo tra il 2013 e il 2014. A partire da queste esperienze di impegno e di lotta popolare a tutela degli equilibri ecoambientali del territorio, l'autore propone strategie alternative per la gestione dei rifiuti e piu' in generale per lo sviluppo delle zone rurali interne e dei borghi storici attraverso la la riscoperta delle identita', delle tradizioni e delle risorse paesaggistiche, storico-culturali, agricole, enogastronomiche e folcloristiche locali : in una parola agricultura. In un intero capitolo del volume viene tracciata una mappa dei disastri ambientali in quella che viene definita la Calabria dei fuochi. Infine l'autore, nel ripercorrere le tappe fondamentali del movimento ecologista nel novecento ne mette a nudo limiti e contraddizioni. Tale variegato mondo, ha subito, sempre secondo lo scrittore, strumentalizzazioni politiche che ne hanno svuotato le enormi potenzialita', relegandolo in gabbie ideologiche prive di qualsivoglia fondamento storico.
