VarietyisperhapsthemostamazingattributeofNature, withanalmostendlessarrayof different molecules and aggregates and tens of millions of distinct forms of life. Yet, in spite of this bewildering diversity, there are some common patterns, henceforth called “phenomenological universalities,” that are found over and over again in completely different contexts. A quest for universalities is not only interesting per se, but can also yield practical applications. If several elds share a common mathematical or conceptual background, a cross-fertilization among them may lead to quick progress, even if ultimately the speci c details of any individual application must be considered independently. We all know that we live in a nonlinear world, although scientists have often tried to linearize it, sometimes as a rst step towards understanding its complexity, often because, before the advent of ubiquitous high computational power, a linear appro- mation was the only viable alternative. In this book we use the term “nonclassical n- linearity” with reference to a particularly intriguing kind of phenomenology, which has been extensively investigated in the last decade in the elds of elasticity and g- materials and whose universality has been conjectured. Its signatures are hystereticity, discrete memory, and other effects which, in the case of continuum mechanics, have been called “fast” and “slow” dynamics.

The book presents foundations of the micropolar continuum mechanics including a short but comprehensive introduction of stress and strain measures, derivation of motion equations and discussion of the difference between Cosserat and classical (Cauchy) continua, and the discussion of more specific problems related to the constitutive modeling, i.e. constitutive inequalities, symmetry groups, acceleration waves, etc.

This book contains the most recent results in the area of strongly inhomogeneous composite structures, including layered materials as well as continua with microstructure. This collection of papers mainly arises from the Euromech Colloquium No. 626 on “Mechanics of High-Contrast Elastic Composites”. Focus is set on the peculiar mechanical behaviour caused by adjoining widely different structural elements (high contrast) in terms of material and/or geometrical properties.

Variational And Extremum Principles In Macroscopic Systems written by Stanislaw Sieniutycz and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Recent years have seen a growing trend to derive models of macroscopic phenomena encountered in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, ecology, self-organisation theory and econophysics from various variational or extremum principles. Through the link between the integral extremum of a functional and the local extremum of a function (explicit, for example, in the Pontryagin's maximum principle variational and extremum principles are mutually related. Thus it makes sense to consider them within a common context. The main goal of Variational and Extremum Principles in Macroscopic Systems is to collect various mathematical formulations and examples of physical reasoning that involve both basic theoretical aspects and applications of variational and extremum approaches to systems of the macroscopic world. The first part of the book is focused on the theory, whereas the second focuses on applications. The unifying variational approach is used to derive the balance or conservation equations, phenomenological equations linking fluxes and forces, equations of change for processes with coupled transfer of energy and substance, and optimal conditions for energy management. - A unique multidisciplinary synthesis of variational and extremum principles in theory and application - A comprehensive review of current and past achievements in variational formulations for macroscopic processes - Uses Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms as a basis for the exposition of novel approaches to transfer and conversion of thermal, solar and chemical energy

Models And Theories In Social Systems written by Cristina Flaut and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-12 with Computers categories.

This book concisely presents a broad range of models and theories on social systems. Because of the huge spectrum of topics involving social systems, various issues related to Mathematics, Statistics, Teaching, Social Science, and Economics are discussed. In an effort to introduce the subject to a wider audience, this volume, part of the series “Studies in Systems, Decision and Control”, equally addresses the needs of mathematicians, statisticians, sociologists and philosophers. The studies examined here are divided into four parts. The first part, “Perusing the Minds Behind Scientific Discoveries”, traces the winding path of Syamal K. Sen and Ravi P. Agarwal’s scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought processes that allowed each of them to master their subject. The second part covers “Theories in Social Systems” and the third discusses “Models in Social Systems”, while the fourth and final part is dedicated to “Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences”. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will offer inquisitive readers a valuable point of departure for exploring these rich, vast, and ever-expanding fields of knowledge.
