The second edition of Non-Perturbative Methods in Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory is an extensively revised version, involving major changes and additions. Although much of the material is special to two dimensions, the techniques used should prove helpful also in the development of techniques applicable in higher dimensions. In particular, the last three chapters of the book will be of direct interest to researchers wanting to work in the field of conformal field theory and strings. This book is intended for students working for their PhD degree and post-doctoral researchers wishing to acquaint themselves with the non-perturbative aspects of quantum field theory. Contents: Free Fields; The Thirring Model; Determinants and Heat Kernels; Self-Interacting Fermionic Models; Nonlinear a Models: Classical Aspects; Nonlinear a Models OCo Quantum Aspects; Exact S-Matrices of 2D Models; The Wess-Zumino-Witten Theory; QED 2: Operator Approach; Quantum Chromodynamics; QED 2: Functional Approach; The Finite Temperature Schwinger Model; Non-Abelian Chiral Gauge Theories; Chiral Quantum Electrodynamics; Conformally Invariant Field Theory; Conformal Field Theory with Internal Symmetry; 2D Gravity and String-Related Topics. Compiled to illustrate the recent history of Quantum Field Theory and its trends, this collection of selected reprints by Jürg Fröhlich, a leading theoretician in the field, is a comprehensive guide of the more mathematical aspects of the subject. Results and methods of the past fifteen years are reviewed. The analytical methods employed are non-perturbative and, for the larger part, mathematically rigorous. Most articles are review articles surveying certain important developments in quantum field theory and guiding the reader towards the original literature. The volume begins with a comprehensive introduction by Jürg Fröhlich. The theory of phase transitions and continuous symmetry breaking is reviewed in the first section. The second section discusses the non-perturbative quantization of topological solitons. The third section is devoted to the study of gauge fields. A paper on the triviality of λϖ4 — theory in four and more dimensions is found in the fourth section, while the fifth contains two articles on “random geometry”. The sixth and final part addresses topics in low-dimensional quantum field theory, including braid statistics, two-dimensional conformal field theory and an application to condensed matter theory.

"Field theory is the framework with which one describes the theory of the standard model of elementary particles and their interactions. The electromagnetic sector (QED) of the standard model is understood extremely well using perturbation theory, but the color interaction (QCD) which is responsible for hadron physics can only be accounted for perturbatively for a limited set of observational data. Due to the fact that at long distances the color interaction is strongly coupled, one cannot reliably apply perturbative methods to extract, for instance, the spectrum of the hadrons. The arsenal of tools to handle strongly coupled systems is obviously much more limited than the one used for weakly coupled ones. Nevertheless, several methods to handle non-perturbative field theories have been developed. The main goal of this book is to expose the reader to those techniques and to describe their applications in two-dimensional and four-dimensional field theories and finally in QCD in four dimensions"--Provided by publisher.

This book provides an understanding of conformal field theory and its importance to both statistical mechanics and string theory. It introduces the Wess-Zumino-Novokov-Witten (WZNW) models and their current algebras, the affine Kac-Moody algebras.

This book is a survey of methods used in the study of two-dimensional models in quantum field theory as well as applications of these theories in physics. It covers the subject since the first model, studied in the fifties, up to modern developments in string theories, and includes exact solutions, non-perturbative methods of study, and nonlinear sigma models. This book is thus of great value to students and research physicists interested in two-dimensional quantum field theory. Numerous (15) useful appendices help the reader to understand and rederive the results at will, making the book self-contained.” Jean-Pierre Ader Mathematical Reviews

Conformal Field Theory written by Yavuz Nutku and has been published by Westview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-02-06 with Science categories.

Quantum field theory has been with us for over 75 years, but it is only in the last 25 that physicists and mathematicians have jointly ventured out to explore its realms beyond the reach of perturbation theory, to the great benefit of both disciplines. Conformal Field Theory consists of pedagogical lectures delivered at the Feza Gursey Institute, Istanbul, in the summer of 1998 on some of these non-perturbative approaches. The topics of these lectures are central to our emerging understanding of conformal field theory and its importance to both statistical mechanics and string theory. Lectures include Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models, the WZNW model as a prototype of general CFT models, meromorphic CFT, Monstrous Moonshine and the classification of CFT, the non-perturbative dynamics of four-dimensional models, and a derivation of the hadronic structure functions from quantum chromodynamics. The book is suitable for advanced graduate students and researchers in theoretical particle or statistical physics as well as pure mathematicians.

The book discusses fundamental aspects of Quantum Field Theory and of Gauge theories, with attention to mathematical consistency. Basic issues of the standard model of elementary particles (Higgs mechanism and chiral symmetry breaking in quantum Chromodynamics) are treated without relying on the perturbative expansion and on instanton calculus.
