HauptbeschreibungThe current relationship between the Nordic countries and the European Union appears complex and confusing. Although Denmark, in 1973, and Sweden and Finland, in 1995, joined the European Union, the entry of Norway into the Union was rejected in the plebiscites of 1972 and 1994. Furthermore, Nordic EU members enjoy permanent exceptions to their integration into the EU: Denmark and Sweden, like the U.K., have declined to become part of the monetary union. Finland is essentially the only Nordic country that entered the EU without substantial exceptions. A membership bid from Iceland was unthinkable; after the fi nancial crisis - which is not the topic of this book - Iceland applied for membership in 2010 and has been in discussions with the European Commission ever since. In other words: the European Union divides Nordic societies, which has resulted in a series of national exceptions to the integration process. Taken together, these exceptions have created an integration process whose overall geometry is contradictory and paradoxical. Considering this melange, this book will discuss the actual state of Nordic integration into the EU from many different perspectives and illuminate future developments in the fi eld of integration. Where is the North relative to Europe today? How can the geometry of Northern Europe's integration, developed over a long time, be characterised? What are the challenges that threaten further development of Nordic-European relationships?

Die Bedeutung der Physiologus- und Bestiarientradition im nordeuropäischen Mittelalter wurde bislang vorwiegend an zwei Artefakten des frühen 13. Jahrhunderts bemessen: den isländischen Physiologus-Fragmenten AM 673 a I/II 4to. Die allegorischen Tiernarrative dieser produktiven und variationsreichen Text- und Bildtradition hinterlassen jedoch darüber hinaus an vielen weiteren Stellen ihre Spuren. Ziel dieses Bandes ist, dem nordeuropäischen Kulturraum einen Platz im Forschungskomplex um Physiologus und Bestiarien zuzuweisen. Im Zentrum steht die Analyse der von Lateineuropa ausgehenden Transferwege des Text- und Bildmaterials und seiner Niederschläge in unterschiedlichen Medien und literarischen Gattungen des Nordens. Neben den isländischen Physiologi mit ihrem engen Bezug zur englischen Bestiarientradition demonstrieren Beispiele aus Enzyklopädik, religiöser Literatur und den originalen riddarasögur des Spätmittelalters das breite Spektrum der nordischen Physiologus- und Bestiarienrezeption. Im Mai 1940 überfiel die Deutsche Wehrmacht die Staaten Nord- und Westeuropas und besetzte sie weitgehend. Einheimische und die bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt nach Norwegen, in die Niederlande, nach Belgien, Luxemburg oder Frankreich geflüchteten Juden fielen jetzt unter deutsche Herrschaft. 1942 waren die Juden in allen Ländern Westeuropas zum Tragen des "Judensterns" verpflichtet, Zwangsarbeit war für Juden die Regel. In Frankreich und Luxemburg hatten die Deportationen in die Gettos und Vernichtungslager bereits begonnen, in den anderen Ländern standen sie unmittelbar bevor. Dieser Band dokumentiert für die Zeit vom deutschen Einmarsch bis Mitte 1942 die schrittweise Entrechtung der Juden, ihre Isolation und die Zerstörung ihrer Existenzgrundlage mittels Berufsverboten und Enteignung. In Briefen und Tagebüchern schildern die verfolgten Juden das Leben unter deutscher Besatzung und die Versuche, diesem Leben durch Emigration doch noch zu entkommen. Die Dokumente zeigen, wie sich jüdische Organisationen bemühten, die Auswirkungen der Verfolgung zu mildern, und wie deutsche Machthaber aber auch einheimische Kollaborateure das Leben der Juden immer stärker reglementierten und jeden Widerstand zu ersticken suchten. Auf der Basis der Edition realisiert der Bayerische Rundfunk die dokumentarische Höredition „Die Quellen sprechen“, die in Staffeln gesendet wird und unter www.die-quellen-sprechen.de nachzuhören ist.
