Norwegian architecture has been in the international spotlight in recent years. Following the success of Made in Norway, this second volume presents a selection of 40 new examples of the best contemporary architecture Norway has to offer. These projects – large and small, rural and urban – are examples of how architects in Norway have reacted to the challenges of today. How are the different aspects of a modern Scandinavian society reflected in its architecture? How are new technical and material possibilities translated into relevant buildings for the 21st century? The book is based on presentations from Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Review of Architecture, but also contains new material, explaining and discussing some of the main challenges of architecture today, as seen from Norway.

Designing Modern Norway: A History of Design Discourse is an intellectual history of design and its role in configuring the modern Norwegian nation state. Rather than a conventional national design history survey that focuses on designers and objects, this is an in-depth study of the ideologies, organizations, strategies and politics that combined might be said to have "designed" the modern nation's material and visual culture. The book analyses main tropes and threads in the design discourse generated around key institutions such as museums, organisations and magazines. Beginning with how British and continental design reform ideas were mediated in Norway and merged with a nationalist sentiment in the late nineteenth century, Designing Modern Norway traces the tireless and wide-ranging work undertaken by enthusiastic and highly committed design professionals throughout the twentieth century to simultaneously modernise the nation by design and to nationalise modern design. Bringing the discussion up towards the present, the book concludes with an examination of how Norway's new-found wealth has profoundly changed the production, mediation and consumption of design.

Snoehetta, one of Scandinaviaa (TM)s leading architecture practices, seeks to develop its architectures within a continuous state of reinvention. Every project differs a " only elementary aspects related to a broad sense of context generate core discussions when developing early concepts. Every architect is an individual a " only referring her or himself to the social context of Snoehetta generates core values of communal thinking. The projects are examples of attitudes rather than designs. They are samples rather than products. They are associative rather than symbolic. They are comments rather than statements. The book describes the collective methods used when exercising the search for solutions to complex realities and shows Snoehettaa (TM)s architecture as a self-referential art within the uncertainties generated by the influence of our contemporary society. Projects like the library of Alexandria, the new opera house in Oslo or the Ras al Khaima gateway exemplify the intentions of the architects and give a hint of how they comment on given preconditions.

The Korsmo House, 1955, is an icon of moder n Scandinavian architecture--an experimental house that has been frequently published in magazines and architecture anthologies. A few years ago a jury elected the house as one of the ten most significant buildings in Norwegian twentieth century architecture. Professor Knut Hjeltnes says in the Arkitektur-N 5/2012 review that "Planet Road, 12, is one of the most important private houses in Norway, owing both to the qualities of the house and the significance of the inhabitants in Norwegian post-war culture." The original owner, Grete Prytz Kittelsen (earlier Korsmo) lived in the house until she passed away in 2010. The house is now listed for preservation. Arne Korsmo (1900-1968) was a prominent Norwegian architect, best-known for a large number of functionalist buildings and interiors made in the 1930s. Also a renowned exhibition architect and product designer, Korsmo was highly-esteemed as a post-war teacher of architecture and interior design. Grete Prytz Korsmo (later Kittelsen, 1917-2010) was a goldsmith and pioneering enamel artist, a 'grand lady' of Scandinavian design and a trusted member of the World Craft Council. Scandinavian Design is subject to increasing interest worldwide and with it so is the Korsmo House. The Korsmo couple were the incarnation of post-war Scandinavian design, winning prizes internationally for product design and exhibition architecture. Planetveien 12 discusses the location of this architectural icon, the house's many incarnations, the biographies of the architect and the Korsmo couple's visit to America where they met Hugo Weber, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and, significantly, Ray and Charles Eames. The book also details Korsmo's other projects and his teaching careeer, alongside detailed plans from inception and a full photographic essay about the finished house. The author, Elisabeth Tostrup, is an architect and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture; previous publications include Norwegian Wood: the Thoughtful Architecture of Wenche Selmer, 2006, and Architecture and Rhetoric: Text and Design in Architectural Competitions, 1999.
