Vermin—rats, cockroaches, pigeons, mosquitoes, and other pests—are, to most people, objects of disgust. And vermin metaphors, likening human beings to these loathed creatures, appear in the ugliest forms of political rhetoric. Indeed, vermin imagery has often been used to denigrate poor, foreign, or racialized people. Yet many writers have reclaimed vermin, giving new meaning to creeping rodents, swarming insects, and wriggling worms. Notes on Vermin is an atlas of the literary vermin that appear in modern and contemporary literature, from Franz Kafka’s gigantic insect to Richard Wright’s city rats to Namwali Serpell’s storytelling mosquitoes. As parasites, trespassers, and collectives, vermin animals prove useful to writers who seek to represent life in the margins of power. Drawing on psychoanalysis, cultural studies, eco-Marxism, and biopolitics, this book explores four uses for literary vermin: as figures for the repressed thought, the uncommitted fugitive, the freeloading parasite, and the surplus life. In a series of short, accessible, interlinked essays, Notes on Vermin explores what animal pests can show us about our cultures, our environments, and ourselves.

Lucinda Cole’s Imperfect Creatures offers the first full-length study of the shifting, unstable, but foundational status of “vermin” as creatures and category in the early modern literary, scientific, and political imagination. In the space between theology and an emergent empiricism, Cole’s argument engages a wide historical swath of canonical early modern literary texts—William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, Abraham Cowley’s The Plagues of Egypt, Thomas Shadwell’s The Virtuoso, the Earl of Rochester’s “A Ramble in St. James’s Park,” and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Journal of the Plague Year—alongside other nonliterary primary sources and under-examined archival materials from the period, including treatises on animal trials, grain shortages, rabies, and comparative neuroanatomy. As Cole illustrates, human health and demographic problems—notably those of feeding populations periodically stricken by hunger, disease, and famine—were tied to larger questions about food supplies, property laws, national identity, and the theological imperatives that underwrote humankind’s claim to dominion over the animal kingdom. In this context, Cole’s study indicates, so-called “vermin” occupied liminal spaces between subject and object, nature and animal, animal and the devil, the devil and disease—even reason and madness. This verminous discourse formed a foundational category used to carve out humankind’s relationship to an unpredictable, irrational natural world, but it evolved into a form for thinking about not merely animals but anything that threatened the health of the body politic—humans, animals, and even thoughts.

Robert Means Lawrence's 'The Magic of the Horse-shoe, with other folk-lore notes' is a meticulous exploration of the customs, rituals, and beliefs that have shaped human culture across civilizations. Captivating in its literary style, Lawrence delves into the esoteric knowledge and superstitions integrating them with universal folkloric motifs. From the emblematic horse-shoe, often considered a harbinger of good fortune, to a broad gamut of folk-lore elements, the book operates within a rich tapestry of global traditions, linking anecdotes and myths across historical and geographical spectra to a common human experience. As a literary piece, it not only entertains but also enlightens, steeped as it is in the thorough research typical of the 19th-century scholarship milieu. Dr. Robert Means Lawrence, a distinguished physician of his time, possessed a profound interest in anthropology and the symbolic aspects of cultural phenomena. His intellectual curiosity might have sprung from interactions with patients from diverse backgrounds or perhaps from a personal inclination towards the universality of certain beliefs. This knowledge and recognition of the strength of oral traditions and superstitions undoubtedly fueled his endeavour to pen 'The Magic of the Horse-shoe, with other folk-lore notes,' thereby contributing to the scholarly discourse on the significance of folklore in understanding the collective psyche of humanity. An enlightening read for folklorists, anthropologists, and the curious layman alike, Lawrence's work demands a place on the shelves of those who desire to unravel the intricacies of cultural lore and the underpinnings of the beliefs that they entail. It offers not just a compendium of folklore but also provides astute observations on their roles in societal structures. For individuals seeking to comprehend the provenance of superstitions and the power of cultural symbols, 'The Magic of the Horse-shoe, with other folk-lore notes' offers an essential and scholarly gateway.
