This book deals with the works of Ivan Cankar, the greatest Slovenian writer, focusing on his relation to existential, social, and moral reality as reflected in individuals and in society at large. The method of literary analysis shows a surprising harmony between personal confessions and a rich symbolism that reveals the writer's unconditional belief in the power of conscience, strong conviction of the sense of victims and the longing for the triumph of love and justice. A holistic interpretation yields the conclusion that most of Cankar's works are confessions that purport to be true to life. His inclination to self-disclosure in dreams alongside the objective disclosure of imperceptible reality indicates that expressive language and a lyrical style are of vital importance to him.

It was traditionally accepted (already in Poetics by Aristotle) that historiographic representations of historical events were more objective than literary ones that belonged to the realm of fiction. In the last 30 years with the breaking of the “Rankeian” faith in the attainable scientific objectivity of historiography it became clear that these two disciplines are not as apart as we might have thought. However, it is not merely the question whether or not we can attain a certain degree of objectivity in both historiography and literature, which is at the core of this book, but rather, what are the means and consequences of contemporary interactions of historiography and art. To be able to open a debate on this issue, the editors gathered scientists from different professional and cultural background (historians, comparative literature scientists and musicologists from different parts of Europe). The result deconstructs not only a belief that historiography can and should be more objective than literature, it also shows that literary history at its very beginning in the 19th Century was crucially influenced by a popular concept of the so called organicism. Furthermore, it shows in several case studies the social consequences of particular representations of history and at the end even doubts that we can speak of historical genres in all forms of art (e.g. in the opera). Gasper Troha and Vanesa Matajc teach in the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at University of Ljubljana. Gregor Pompe teaches in the Department of Musicology at University of Ljubljana.

Monografija Slovenska literarna veda od Trubarja do druge svetovne vojne je življenjsko delo Darka Dolinarja, strokovnjaka za zgodovino in metodologijo literarne vede na Slovenskem. Njegova knjiga prvič pri nas v obliki znanstvene sinteze predstavlja razvoj strokovnega in znanstvenega obravnavanja literature od zametkov v obdobju reformacije prek baročnega in razsvetljenskega polihistorstva ter začetkov nacionalne literarne zgodovine v 19. stoletju do vzpostavitve literarne vede kot temeljne univerzitetne discipline leta 1919 in nadaljnjega razvoja njenih različnih usmeritev, med njimi tudi primerjalne književnosti, vse do začetka druge svetovne vojne. Dolinarjevo delo odpravlja dolgoletno vrzel v slovenski literarni vedi, ki je sicer ne bi in še dolgo ne bo zapolnil nihče drug. Knjiga se razvejanega področja, za katerega je v rabi tudi termin postklasična naratologija, loteva iz dveh literarnovednih perspektiv: historično razvojne in sistematske ali teoretično metodološke. Tako zajame pojav, ki v slovenski literarni vedi doslej še ni bil obravnavan na ta način in v takem obsegu in se pri tem osredotoči na verbalne pripovedi. Prvi del knjige se ukvarja s teoretskimi preliminarijami, vpeljavo temeljnih pojmov in terminološkimi vprašanji, določitvijo predmeta raziskovanja in definicijami pripovedi. Drugi del sledi zgodovini teorij pripovedi in oblikovanju njenega pojmovnega instrumentarija skozi več razvojnih faz. Tretji del pregleda slovenske dosežke in jih primerja z razvojem mednarodnih raziskav. Četrti del pa preverja aplikabilnost sodobnih pripovednoteoretskih teženj ob konkretnem gradivu. Obravnava koncept vsevednega pripovedovanja, vidike naratologije drame in pojav pripovednosti v dramatiki Dušana Jovanovića, razvoj naratologije družbenih spolov, vpeljavo pripovednoteoretskih kategorij v raziskovanje avtobiografij in zaokroži razpravljanje z vstopom na interdisciplinarno področje t. i. historiografske naratologije. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Koron’s monograph explores a vast field of theory – occassionally called post-classical narratology – from the historical-developmental and the systematic or theoretical-methodological perspectives. The first part of the book treats the theoretical preliminaries, basic concepts, terminological questions, delimitations of the research subject, and the definitions of narrative. The second part outlines the history of narrative theories, divided into several phases, and the formation of its concepts. The third part discusses Slovenian contributions to the field and compares them to the international state of research. The fourth part examines the applicability of contemporary narratological approaches to concrete texts. It treats the concept of omniscient narration, aspects of narratology of drama and the phenomenon of narrativity in the plays of Dušan Jovanović (1939–), the development of gendered narratology, the introduction of narratological concepts in autobiographies and concludes the discussion with entering the interdisciplinary field of historiographical narratology.
