Reflete esta obra sobre a identidade europeia, assente em matrizes culturais clássicas e judaico-cristãs. Se hoje podemos afirmar que não existem diferenças substanciais de cultura entre os povos do Ocidente, latinos, germanos ou eslavos, ou entre aqueles que, não sendo europeus, herdaram também uma parte significativa da sua cultura (americanos, australianos ou africanos), isso deve-se a um passado coletivo e a toda uma herança espiritual, intelectual, ético-política e civilizacional do Mundo Antigo que nunca se apagou por completo. As primeiras nações da Europa Moderna formaram-se sob a influência das gloriosas ruínas da Antiga Roma, síntese da civilização greco-romana e do universalismo cristão. Recorde-se, na Idade Média, Boécio, Cassiodoro, Santo Isidoro de Sevilha, de significação quase simbólica, pelo seu papel na transcrição, conservação e reutilização dos escritos clássicos, e pela importância das suas obras, como fonte do conhecimento e factor de transmissão às sucessivas gerações do Ocidente. E entre todos, S. Tomás de Aquino, intérprete fiel da mensagem ético-política aristotélico-ciceroniana e do direito romano, marco na história do pensamento europeu até à modernidade. O Renascimento, época áurea das cortes europeias é também o momento alto da história, do humanismo e da cultura na Península Ibérica, em Portugal: descobríamos e evangelizávamos novos mundos, enriquecíamos a Europa com a primeira globalização e encontro de culturas, à escala mundial, e assistíamos à europeização da cultura. Acompanhávamos afoita e conscientemente uma Europa que, no dizer de Joaquim de Carvalho, “sentia Portugal conviva do grande banquete do espírito Europeu”. This work reflects upon the European identity based on Classical and Judaeo-Christian matrices. If today we can claim that there are no substantial cultural differences between the people of the west (Latins, Germanics and Slavs) or amongst those that have inherited a significant part of this culture while not themselves European (Americans, Australians and Africans), this is due to a collective past and to a whole spiritual, ethical-political and civilizational legacy from the Ancient World which was never completely erased. The first nations of modern Europe were formed under the influence of the glorious ruins of Ancient Rome, which was a synthesis of Graeco-Roman civilization and Christian universalism. In the Middle Ages, Boethius, Cassiodorus, Isidore of Seville had an almost symbolic importance due to their role in the transcription, conservation and reuse of Classical writings and with the importance of these works, as a source of knowledge and factor of transmission to successive generations in the west. Amongst them, Thomas Aquinus, faithful interpreter of the Aristotelian-Ciceronian ethics-politics and of Roman law, stands out as a landmark of European thought. The Renaissance was a golden period for the European courts and a high point in the history of humanism and culture in the Iberian Peninsula and for Portugal: because of course it was the Portuguese and the Spanish that discovered and evangelized new worlds, enriched Europe with the first globalization and encounter of cultures on the world scale and helped in the Europeanization of culture. This work conscientiously accompanies a Europe which, in the words of Joaquim de Carvalho, “felt Portugal participate in the great banquet of the European spirit”.

A arte do cinema possibilita novas formas de experimentar a memória. Este livro se manifesta no contexto de mudança de paradigma no que diz respeito ao arquivo e de uma necessidade de expansão de seus significados. A hipótese central elabora a ideia de que são as práticas experimentais de found footage, produzidas a partir dos anos de 1990, as que melhor expressam certas percepções da história, por ampliar as conexões entre imagens e mundos diversos, mais compatíveis com os tempos atuais, e que se esquivam, portanto, de uma lógica linear em favor de um pensamento dialético. Para desenvolver essa hipótese, discuto noções de "documento", "arquivo", "ruína", "sobrevivência", entre outras, dispondo-as sob a perspectiva da história do cinema. Retomo, ainda, os procedimentos da apropriação no cinema, nos quais analiso aspectos históricos e de formação, assim como as variações que alcançam nas práticas documentais e experimentais de found footage.
