Nurdin Abdullah, seorang Kepala Daerah Kabupaten Bantaeng (priode: 2008-2012) sebuah daerah berada di Sulawesi Selatan yang berjarak sekitar 123 km dari kota Makassar. Nurdin Abdullah adalah seorang akademisi dan sebagai pengusaha sukses menduduki posisi Presiden Direktur pada tiga perusahaan PMA asal Jepang. Nurdin Abddullah satu - satunya Bupati yang bergelar professor di Indonesia, tidak heran jika ada yang menyebutnnya Bupati tercerdas di Indonesia. Ketika awal harus mengambil keputusan menjadi Bupati memang menjadi dilema, hati kecilnya tidak pernah bercita - cita, bahkan tidak pernah memimpikan menjadi seorang Bupati. Istri dan anak serta mertua tidak ada yang menyetujui, termasuk profesornya yang ada di Jepang keberatan. Tetapi, ayahnya yang masih keturunan raja Bantaeng yang memintanya, dengan alasan ini permintaan sang leluhur. Nurdin Abdullah juga didatangi sejumlah kyai (pemuka agama) dari Bantaeng, katanya ingin menurunkan saya dari kenikmatan. Yang dimaksud 'menurunkan dari kenikmatan' adalah adalah gaji Bupati sangat lebih kecil dibandingkan jika Nurdin Abdullah sebagai Presiden Direktur di perusahaan yang ia pimpin. Selang beberapa hari, ribuan masyarakat Bantaeng mendatangi saya di perusahaan, bermohon agar saya bersedia mencalonkan diri sebagai Bupati di Kabupaten Bantaeng. Mungkin sudah jalannya yang diberikan oleh Allah swt. karena rakyat sendiri yang meminta. Sulit sekali Nurdin Abdullah untuk menolaknya. Dalam kurung waktu tujuh tahun dalam kepemimpinannya, Bantaeng menjadi mentereng dikenal di berbagai pelosok di Indonesia, telah memperoleh 50 penghargaan nasional dan terkenal pula dengan berbagai inovasinya dalam pelayanan kesehatan serta keberhasilannya dalam transformasi teknologi pertanian. Atas prestasinya itu, Nurdin Abdullah mendapat penghargaan meraih anugerah People of The Year (POTY) 2012 untuk kategori Kepala Daerah terbaik versi Harian Seputar Indonesia, kemudian 2013 memperoleh Innovative Government Award (IGA) dari Menteri Dalam Negeri, membuat pula Nurdin Abdullah makin banyak dikenal dan namanya kian populer. Berbagai undangan narasumber harus dihadiri serta menjadi bintang tamu dalam berbagai acara talkshow di beberapa TV swasta. Diujung 2014 mendapatkan penghargaan sebagai Kepala Daerah yang Mendapat Sentimen Positif Media Sosial. Kini, Nurdin Abdullah selalu disepadankan kepopulerannya dengan Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok, Ridwan Kamil, dan Tri Rismaharini Walikota Surabaya. Dengan keberhasilan itu, membuat Nurdin Abdullah yang dikenal memiliki jiwa sosial ini, dapat melenggang dengan mulus menduduki kursi Bupati pada priode kedua (priode: 2013-2018). This book analyses the transformation of political representation in contemporary Indonesia to argue the need to better understand how political representatives use claims to engage in storytelling about themselves and the community they represent. By adopting a new approach that focuses on the cultural and performative aspects of representation and draws on a substantive evidence base of representative claims, this book examines common narratives developed by Joko Widodo, Tri Rismaharini, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Ridwan Kamil and Nurdin Abdullah. Through this analysis, the book highlights two key foundations of their claims: technocratic focus and innovative engagement. This study considers how the ideational power generated through the representative claim-making of these leaders interacts and competes with other forms of power. Moreover, the author emphasises the success of the representative claims developed by the innovative technocrats, while noting the impact their emergence has had on the broader context of Indonesian politics. We are delighted to introduce the 2019 Brawijaya International Conference on Social and Political Sciences (B-SPACE). This book highlights the gains that a citizenship approach offers to the study of democracy in Indonesia, demonstrating that the struggle for citizenship and the historical development of democracy in the country are closely interwoven. The book arises from a research agenda aiming to help Indonesia’s democracy activists by unpacking citizenship as it is produced and practiced through movements against injustice, taking the shape of struggles by people at grassroots levels for cultural recognition, social and economic injustice, and popular representation. Such struggles in Indonesia have engaged with the state through both discursive and non-discursive processes. The authors show that while the state is the common focal point, these struggles are fragmented across different sectors and subject positions. The authors thus propose that developing chains of solidarity is highly important to motivating a democracy that not only has sovereign control over public affairs, but also robust channels and organisations for political representation. In advocating the development of transformative agendas, organisations, and strategies as an important need, and an enduring challenge, for the realization of citizenship, this book is timely and relevant to the study of contemporary Indonesia's socio-political landscape.
