"Qualidade de Vida," "Resultados/Desfechos em Saúde" e outros termos respeitantes aos impactos físicos, mentais e emocionais vividos por pessoas quando enfrentam desafios de saúde são muitas vezes bem e mal utilizados nos cuidados de saúde e na comunidade de pesquisa em saúde. Muitos destes termos são usados de forma livre, sem se reconhecer que tèm significados completamente diferentes e que, portanto, exigem diferentes abordagens de medição e diferentes tipos de intervenções para que possam ser otimizadas. A ideia de criar um "dicionário" destes termos surgiu para que principiantes e especialistas, pesquisadores e clínicos, possam em conjunto enfrentar esses desafios de resultados/desfechos em saúde. O termo correto para este conjunto de definições é "vocabulário para um público vertical," pois as definições refletem a sua utilização na medição de qualidade de vida e de resultados/desfechos em saúde; as definições foram escritas para terem significado para principiantes, sendo, contudo, úteis para o especialista. Como ponto de partida para o vocabulário, os termos foram escolhidos com base na frequència da sua utilização em artigos sobre investigação em qualidade de vida publicados em revistas. Os termos enquadram-se em oito conceitos, carecendo de terminologia consistente e correta: processo de investigação, propriedades de medição, estatísticas para investigação em qualidade de vida, desenho para investigação em qualidade de vida, resultados/desfechos reportados pelo doente (PRO), teorias e modelos, tradução de conhecimento, e fatores pessoais. Ao invés de ser "um dispositivo literário malévolo para impedir o crescimento da língua e para a tornar rígida e pouco flexível" (Ambrose Bierce, Dicionário do Diabo), "este dicionário é, no entanto, uma obra muito útil" (Ambrose Bierce, Dicionário do Diabo). Para evitar o "diabo," os termos que refletem avanços modernos na investigação ou desenho de resultados/desfechos em saúde foram incluídos mesmo que ainda não estejam a ser vulgarmente utilizados na investigação em qualidade de vida. Por exemplo, embora desenhos de escalonamento ou de plataformas de ensaio ainda não tenham entrado no mundo da investigação em qualidade de vida, nunca o serão se não forem conhecidos. Mais de 20 pessoas contribuíram com definições; a versão original do dicionário esteve disponível para revisão e comentários pelos membros da ISOQOL e as suas sugestões e propostas de modificação foram incluídas, acrescentando ao processo uma componente de revisão pelos pares. Por fim, para a versão em portuguès, outros 20 investigadores de Portugal e do Brasil participaram na edição.
