Acontece que Leonel estava apaixonado por Liberato, um homenzarrão rude e façanhudo, de farto bigode, que o gostava de ver vestido de dama fina. Publicado em 1906, este é um dos primeiros romances em português, e também um dos primeiros da Europa, que aborda abertamente a homossexualidade masculina, tomando-a para tema central do enredo. "O desflorador da honestidade do Leonel fora um contínuo do Liceu, antigo sargento de cavalaria bruto e espadachim, que os rapazes temiam e respeitavam, e era chamado em particular quando se queria conservar a ordem no estabelecimento. Sodomita medonho, a beleza grácil do Leonel tentou-lhe o vício, e em troca de o defender contra as partidas dos camaradas, abusou dele, iniciando-o nas mais desonestas práticas. Pervertido, e conhecido o caso, o Leonel prestou-se às exigências lascivas dos colegas, e quando ainda não completara dezoito anos, já tinha pertencido ao major Terramonde, ao padre Amâncio, explicador de matemática, ao mestre-de-obras Aparício Batalha, e ao capitalista Couto, de cujas mãos avaras passou para as do conde da Lagoa Escura, homem riquíssimo, distinto, ilustrado, do mais fino gosto estético e artístico. This volume is a collection of essays dealing with the critical dialogue between the cultural production of the Hispanic/Latino world and that of the so-called Orient or the Orient itself, including the Asian and Arab worlds. As we see in these essays, the Europeans’ cultural others (peripheral nations and former colonies) have established an intercultural and intercontinental dialogue among themselves, without feeling the need to resort to the center-metropolis’ mediation. These South-to-South dialogues tend not to be as asymmetric as the old dialogue between the (former) metropolis (the hegemonic, Eurocentric center) and the colonies. These essays about Hispanic and Latino cultural production (most of them dealing with literature, but some covering urban art, music, and film) provide vivid examples of de-colonizing impetus and cultural resistance.
