One of only a hundred or so books originally written in the Basque language during the last four centuries, Obabakoak is a shimmering, mercurial novel about life in Obaba, a remote, exotic, Basque village. Obaba is peopled with innocents and intellectuals, shepherds and schoolchildren, whilst everyone from a lovelorn schoolmistress to a cultured but self-hating dwarf wanders across the page. Obabakoak is a dazzling collage of stories, town gossip, diary excerpts and literary theory, all held together by Atxaga's distinctive and tenderly ironic voice.

"A brilliantly inventive writer ... he understands the nature of storytelling and is at once terribly moving and wildy funny."—A.S. Byatt Obabakoak is a shimmering, mercurial collection about life in Obaba, a remote, exotic Basque village. A schoolboy's miningengineer father tricks him into growing up, an unfortunate environmentalist rescues deceptively harmless lizards, and a rescue mission on a Swiss mountain-climbing expedition in Nepal turns into murder. Obaba is peopled with innocents and intellectuals, shepherds and schoolchildren, while everyone from a lovelorn schoolmistress to a cultured but self-hating dwarf wanders across the page. Hints of darker undercurrents mingle with moments of wry humor in this dazzling collage of stories, town gossip, diary excerpts, and literary theory, all held together by Bernardo Atxaga's distinctive and tenderly ironic voice. An unforgettable work from an international literary giant, whom The Observer (London) listed among the top twenty-one writers of the twenty-first century.

"A unique and stunning international literary event: winner of Spain's National Prize for Literature, Obabakoak, a work of fiction, is one of only several hundred books to be written in four centuries in Basque, a language understood by few (the author himself had to translate his book into Spanish to broaden its appeal throughout Europe, where it has been published to ecstatic acclaim)." "Obabakoak means "the people and things of Obaba (a Basque village)," and the narrator weaves a tale reminiscent of Scheherazade's. The village is peopled with rascals, innocents, intellectuals, shepherds, hunters, idiots, and creatures of superstition, and the interconnection of their private worlds is brilliantly evoked. Parody, riddles, texts within texts abound in a book that is playful yet always tinged with melancholy."

Ethics And Aesthetics Of Translation written by Harriet Hulme and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-19 with Literary Criticism categories.

Ethics and Aesthetics of Translation engages with translation, in both theory and practice, as part of an interrogation of ethical as well as political thought in the work of three bilingual European authors: Bernardo Atxaga, Milan Kundera and Jorge Semprún. In approaching the work of these authors, the book draws upon the approaches to translation offered by Benjamin, Derrida, Ricœur and Deleuze to highlight a broad set of ethical questions, focused upon the limitations of the monolingual and the democratic possibilities of linguistic plurality; upon our innate desire to translate difference into similarity; and upon the ways in which translation responds to the challenges of individual and collective remembrance. Each chapter explores these interlingual but also intercultural, interrelational and interdisciplinary issues, mapping a journey of translation that begins in the impact of translation upon the work of each author, continues into moments of linguistic translation, untranslatability and mistranslation within their texts and ultimately becomes an exploration of social, political and affective (un)translatability. In these journeys, the creative and critical potential of translation emerges as a potent, often violent, but always illuminating, vision of the possibilities of differentiation and connection, generation and memory, in temporal, linguistic, cultural and political terms.

"This analysis of the writings of Bernardo Atxaga is inspired by his image of the Basque language as a hedgehog that has "survived ... by withdrawing," but that has now emerged - preeminently in the work of this most international of Basque authors." "Following the trail of the hedgehog reveals the riches of contemporary Basque literature and Atxaga's central position in the Basque literary world. The book explores the enthusiastic global reception of Atxaga's fiction - in particular Obabakoak, which has been translated into twenty-six languages - but also his short stories, drama, poetry, and writings for children and young people. It focuses on the preeminence of the fantastic in Atxaga's work, the experimental style of his hybrid poetic texts, and the "heterotopias" of his realist novels."--BOOK JACKET.

Nevada Days written by Bernardo Atxaga and has been published by Graywolf Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-10 with Fiction categories.

A seductive, unclassifiable blend of autobiography and fiction set in Reno, from the preeminent Basque author Nine months as a writer in residence can prove unnerving for anyone. For Bernardo Atxaga, newly arrived with his wife and two daughters, research at the Center for Basque Studies in Reno, Nevada, is anything but straightforward. The neon lights and harsh, windswept desert appear full of ominous signs: A raccoon that watches the house at night, eyes glowing. A series of sexual assaults on campus by an unknown assailant. A spider scuttling endlessly in a glass jar kept by a colleague. And the kidnapping and murder of a young college girl in the house next door. Fragments of the Basque diaspora appear everywhere: A photo of the heavyweight boxer Paulino Uzcudun, who fought Max Baer in the 1930s. The funeral of a Basque sheepherder. Daily life also turns up some unusual characters—a university friend suspected of involvement in the assaults on campus, a friend who takes Atxaga for long drives in the desert where The Misfits was filmed, and cowboys at a Tex-Mex joint. Nevada Days, told in a series of diary-like entries, mixes a constellation of lively incidents in Reno with memories from Atxaga’s childhood. The routines of everyday life are the only way to resolve the deep wounds of history and relationships, however fleeting or enduring. Trapped in the deeply alien landscape of Nevada, Atxaga weaves together past and present to see the West from a refreshing, if also ominous and unsettling, vantage.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION One of the fundamental novels of twentieth century literature. SPANISH NATIONAL BOOK PRIZE 2019 Obabakoak brings together the exciting stories of the inhabitants of the Obaba territory: the geography teacher who remembers his strange love affair with a girl he only knows from his letters, the young teacher who has to learn to fight loneliness during a cold winter, the relationship of a canon with a child lost in the woods, the writer who turns his life around when he discovers an amazing detail in the enlargement of an old school photo ... Bernardo Atxaga masterfully spins all these stories, and those that his characters tell us, to celebrate the power of the word: the old letters where the secrets and the most intimate confessions are consigned, the memories, the books that take us to other places -the cold streets of Hamburg, the green meadows of Euskadi, the Amazon rainforest- and that give us a hand to rescue us from loneliness. ** Euskadi Award. ** Critics Award. ** Prix Millepages. ** National Narrative Award. ** Adapted to film with the title Obaba, this novel has been published in more than twenty countries.
