L’anthropologie de Jean-Loup Amselle se distingue par son attention constante à l’histoire et par sa conception pragmatique des identités comme résultantes de rapports de force toujours susceptibles d’être modifiés. On lui doit la déconstruction des catégories d’« ethnie » et de « métissage », une critique acerbe de l’ethnologie coloniale, de l’idéologie républicaine et de leurs raciologies conjointes, mais également l’élaboration de cadres conceptuels nouveaux. Sa théorie des « branchements » – ou toutes les dérivations opérées à partir d’un réseau, ainsi que les torsions et emprunts latéraux entre divers « lieux de la culture », toujours en tension relationnelle les uns avec les autres – présente ainsi une alternative féconde aux théories postcoloniales de la polarisation et de l’hybridité. Cet ouvrage s’attache à mettre en relief la profonde cohérence d’une oeuvre qui a constamment remis en question les découpages ethniques ou communautaristes des corps sociaux et politiques, ainsi que les partitions disciplinaires entre anthropologie, sociologie, histoire de l’art, linguistique et études littéraires. De plus, on trouvera à la fin de chaque contribution les réponses de Jean-Loup Amselle à celles-ci. Il contient enfin quatre nouveaux essais de l’auteur. Professeur de littératures francophones à l’Université de Strasbourg, Anthony Mangeon a enseigné aux Universités de Stanford (Californie), de Cergy-Pontoise et de Paul-Valéry Montpellier (France). Il est l’auteur ou le directeur de plusieurs ouvrages, dont La Pensée noire et l’Occident (Sulliver, 2010) et Postures postcoloniales (Karthala- MSH-M, 2012). Drawing the Past, Volume 1: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the United States, the first book in a two-volume series, provides a map of current approaches to comics and their engagement with historical representation. The first section of the book on history and form explores the existence, shape, and influence of comics as a medium. The second section concerns the question of trauma, understood both as individual traumas that can shape the relationship between the narrator and object, and historical traumas that invite a reassessment of existing social, economic, and cultural assumptions. The final section on mythic histories delves into ways in which comics add to the mythology of the US. Together, both volumes bring together a range of different approaches to diverse material and feature remarkable scholars from all over the world.
