Lev Semiónovich Vygotsky (17 de noviembre de 1896, Orsha, Imperio Ruso, actual Bielorrusia - 11 de junio de 1934, Moscú, Unión Soviética) o Lev Vygotski (según la transliteración del cirílico del original) fue un psicólogo ruso de origen judío, uno de los más destacados teóricos de la psicología del desarrollo, fundador de la psicología histórico-cultural y claro precursor de la neuropsicología soviética, de la que sería máximo exponente el médico ruso Alexander Luria. Su obra fue descubierta y divulgada por los medios académicos del mundo occidental en la década de 1960.El carácter prolífico de su obra y su temprano fallecimiento hicieron que se lo conozca como "el Mozart de la psicología" (caracterización creada por Stephen Toulmin). La idea fundamental de su obra es la de que el desarrollo de los humanos únicamente puede explicarse en términos de interacción social. El desarrollo consiste en la interiorización de instrumentos culturales (como el lenguaje) que inicialmente no nos pertenecen, sino que pertenecen al grupo humano en el que nacemos, el cual nos transmite los productos culturales a través de la interacción social. El "Otro", pues, tiene un papel preponderante en la teoría de Vygotski.

Para este tomo se han seleccionado dos de las obras más conocidas de la teoría psicológica general de Vygotski. La primera, "Pensamiento y Lenguaje", aparte de ser la que ha dado a conocer internacionalmente a este psicólogo, se trata de la obra más leída del autor y también la que cuenta con más ediciones distintas. La presente edición es quizá la versión más acabada y definitiva, la que salió del manuscrito de Vygotski. Dedicado al problema de la relación entre el pensamiento y el lenguaje, en él encontramos, además de un análisis crítico de los intentos más conocidos de resolver este problema en la psicología europea de los años veinte y treinta, su importante trabajo de investigación en el que desarrolla las tesis fundamentales de su teoría general. A lo largo de los sucesivos capítulos, encontramos el inicio de lo que fue posteriormente un "diálogo" entre dos grandes autores, Piaget y Vygotski. La segunda son las "Conferencias sobre Psicología" dictadas por Vygotski en el Instituto Pedagógico de Leningrado en 1932. En estas conferencias se recogen de forma "condensada" las ideas vygotskianas sobre la percepción, la memoria, la volición, etc., y constituye un excelente anticipo para la que es otra de las obras fundamentales de Vygotski, "Historia del Desarrollo de las Funciones Psíquicas Superiores" (véanse los otros volúmenes de las Obras Escogidas de este autor).
