La considerazione di base è che se si vive quello che non si analizza, non si sa quello che si vive. Un metodo di analisi della realtà umana è quello degli aforismi, che si basano sull’osservazione dei fatti e sulla riflessione. Si vede allora quello che solamente si guardava. Inoltre, gli aforismi sono risposte che pongono domande alla mente di chi legge. Il risultato è che si aumenta la conoscenza e la comprensione della realtà che si vive. Da uomo di scienza, Mario Vassalle usa il metodo sperimentale (l’esperienza) anche in questa sua nuova pubblicazione, di aforismi e pensieri brevi in lingua italiana e inglese, guidandoci alla scoperta del mondo che ci circonda e di noi stessi. Per afferrare i significati più profondi, bisogna andare oltre l’apparenza per arrivare alla conoscenza e consapevolezza della nostra realtà. In queste pagine potremo così indagare la mente umana nelle sue varie componenti (razionale, affettiva, istintiva e subconscia) e la sua relazione con il mondo. Un esempio del passaggio dall’analisi degli aforismi a una sintesi di più ampio respiro è illustrato nel saggio finale sulla “Libertà e i fattori che la regolano”. Il messaggio di questa analisi è che imparare è essenziale per progredire oltre se stessi. Mario Vassalle è nato a Viareggio nel 1928. Dopo il Liceo Classico, si è laureato in Medicina nel 1953 e specializzato in Cardiologia nel 1955 all’Università di Pisa. Nel 1958 si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti, dove, presso la State University of New York, si è dedicato come Professore di Fisiologia e Farmacologia allo studio sperimentale dei meccanismi che fanno battere il cuore. Ha insegnato agli studenti di Medicina e a candidati per il Dottorato di Ricerca (PhD). È ora Professore Emerito. La sua attività di scienziato gli ha valso nel suo campo una reputazione mondiale con numerosi riconoscimenti americani e internazionali. Mario Vassalle ha esteso i suoi interessi dalla scienza alla letteratura (poesie e aforismi) e alla filosofia, pubblicando cinque libri di poesie, dieci libri di aforismi e due libri su temi filosofici.

NOTA INTRODUTTIVA “Si sa di più quando si capisce di più”: la conseguenza è che la mente opera ad un livello più alto. L’autore, Mario Vassalle, di professione è uno scienziato (un elettrofisiologo del cuore) e pertanto la sua mentalità lo porta a cercare la verità nell’analisi dei fatti (come è tipico della scienza). I suoi aforismi, riflessioni e intuizioni contribuiscono risposte specifiche all’insopprimibile desiderio di capire. The poetics of epiphany have long been recognised as a broad aesthetic trend of modernism, related to the power of art to reveal the hidden essence of reality. Yet the critical use of the concept is still contested, complicated by the fact that in many modernist works exceptional moments are anything but revealing. This book embraces the blurred nature of epiphanies and sets out to explore their effects in a comparative journey paralleling Anglophone and Italian modernist short fiction. The work of four modernist short story writers – Luigi Pirandello, James Joyce, Federigo Tozzi, and Katherine Mansfield – illuminates epiphanies as complex phenomena, connected to multiple aspects of modernist culture, which appear in artistic experiences developed independently in the same decades. The ideas of Henri Bergson, William James, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, among others, nuance our understanding of the stories and of the author's vision behind them. At least three threads emerge, as a result, as common characteristics of modernist epiphanies. First, they are a result of the ‘inward turn’ and of the curiosity about the psyche’s subconscious processes. Second, they attempt to rediscover lived experience as a source of partial but reliable knowledge. Third, they re-actualise mystical experiences as conduits to a secular insight about life. The main appeal of these modernist moments of enlightenment is precisely that they establish an atmosphere of ambiguity where multiple and sometimes irreconcilable potential meanings can be found. By so doing, they succeed in evoking the undifferentiated creative potential that, according to the widespread vitalist philosophies of the age, constitutes the essence of life. In reframing ambiguity and indeterminacy as spaces of creation and choice, epiphanies thus bring out a lesser known, life-affirming but not naïve vein of modernist inspiration.
