The formal systems of logic have ordinarily been regarded as independent of biology, but recent developments in evolutionary theory suggest that biology and logic may be intimately interrelated. In this book, William Cooper outlines a theory of rationality in which logical law emerges as an intrinsic aspect of evolutionary biology. This biological perspective on logic, though at present unorthodox, could change traditional ideas about the reasoning process. Cooper examines the connections between logic and evolutionary biology and illustrates how logical rules are derived directly from evolutionary principles, and therefore have no independent status of their own. Mathematical and statistical approaches to evolutionary theory are numerous. The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held at the Universite de Montreal, Montreal, August 3-21, 1987, was an opportunity to review most of the classical approaches and to study the more recent developments. The participation of theoretical biologists and geneticists as well as applied mathematicians and statisticians made possible exchanges of ideas between students and scholars having different views on the subject. These Proceedings contain the lecture notes of seven (7) of the eleven (11) series of lectures that were given. ESS (Evolutionarily Stable Stragety) theory is considered from many perspectives, from a game-theoretic approach to understanding behavior and evolution (W.G.S. Hines), and a systematic classification of properties and patterns of ESS's (C. Cannings) to particular applications of the differential geometry of the Shahshahani metric (E. Akin). Extensions of ESS theory to sexual populations and finite populations, not to mention games between relatives, are presented (W.G.S. Hines). Special attention is given to the classical game called the War of Attrition but with n players and random rewards (C. Cannings). The Shahshahani metric is also used to show the occurrence of cycling in the two-locus, two-allele model (E. Akin). Various inference problems in population genetics are adressed. Procedures to detect and measure selection components and polymorphism (in particular, the Wahlund effect) at one or several loci from mother-offspring combinations in natural populations are discussed at length (F.B. Christiansen).

Ever since Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859, genetic evolutionary theory has increasingly served as the foundation for fields that deal with organisms that arose by natural selection. This thesis argues that economic theory should integrate with Darwinian theory through the creation of a "genetic evolutionary economics". The promise of genetic evolutionary economics is a better understanding of human nature and, consequently, a more accurate and comprehensive economic science. Economic theory rests on a set of assumptions about human nature. These economic axioms concern human genes, but there is no explicit connection between genetic evolution and economic theory. As a result, human behavior and economic predictions of that behavior diverge in a variety of important settings. Why, for example, do most people save too little for the future when economics assumes that they will save enough? Chapter 2 discusses the difficulties inherent in the standard economic approach. Natural selection theory, the chapter argues, is the best tool for refining the axioms of economics. Genetic evolutionary economics allows the derivation of parameters that are intractable with standard economic techniques. There is, for instance, an ancient debate within economics about the role of self-interest in human affairs. Chapter 3 builds a genetic evolutionary model relevant to this issue, and concludes that a Darwinian lens removes many of the apparent paradoxes. Genetic evolutionary economics is a scientific endeavor. As such, it produces specific, testable hypotheses concerning behavior in economically relevant situations. Chapter 4 reports on a theoretical and experimental investigation of gift giving. A genetic evolutionary model organizes the existing data on gift giving and makes novel, testable predictions. Laboratory experiments, performed to test the theory, confirm the evolutionary model's predictions.

Conventional decision theory tells us only which behavioral choices we ought to make if we follow certain axioms. In real life, however, our choices are governed by cognitive mechanisms shaped over evolutionary time through the process of natural selection. Evolution has created strong biases in how and when we process information, and it is these evolved cognitive building blocks—from signal detection and memory to individual and social learning—that provide the foundation for our choices. An evolutionary perspective thus sheds necessary light on the nature of how we and other animals make decisions.
